hat's easy. Firstly, if someone didn't like music or films that much and didn't keep all their photos and music on their phone, 16GB would be more than adequate. Secondly, if the phone was purely for business, in most cases it also wouldn't have much media on it.
Hmm, how much is this in real space? About 12GB?
With the high quality cameras on these phones and the size of some apps (Copilot on my 4S takes up 2.5GB in maps for Europe), this might seem a bit cramped. Still a bit of an oddball decision to drop the 32GB instead of the 16GB? Maybe a bit of a nudge towards the 64GB? smile

For me, I have the 32GB 4S and that was plenty, my Nexus 5 was also 32GB, the SGS2 was 16GB but I used an SD card. 32GB would be perfect for me, 16GB just might not cut it.
I was wondering if there was a need for an iPhone that just functions without space for photos, video, big apps etc - a business phone perhaps. You may be right - a nudge towards 64GB may be the reason also. It depends how you interpret the jump.

On a related note, I'm a bit annoyed that the 5S isn't available with a large capacity anymore. This is now the phone of choice for those of us that value a compact phone.

It's pretty standard practice from them, isn't it? Keep the older phones as low capacity "budget" options in the range?
It also limits the number of variants they have to keep on stock for the stores much better, with a couple of colours, two new models and a number of storage options, you'll be having 20 variants in no time which isn't great from a logistics POV.

But, I agree with you. I was quite surprised for them upping the screen size that much without a new/high end option for the 4". I was expecting a 4" iP6 and 5" something, especially with so many of the userbase naming the smaller form factor as a USP.

Has one one with a 5S been running iOS 8? has it increased battery life any?

No st!

I took it out Friday lunchtime before knowing this, got an order confirmation later in the day, saying i would be updated when it was dispatched.
I just tried phoning Vodafone to see if it had gone through but they said it hasn't shown up on the account just yet.
If i'm honest i really don't care if it hasn't i just want to know so i can upgrade elsewhere as my IP5 is on the way out!

They have said any existing orders including iphone 6 ones would be cancelled. Any contracts up and running would apparently be ok though.

When will iOS8 become available to us mere mortals?

Dunno, but I know quite a few people have been running beta versions for a while.

If you're feeling brave, you can upgrade to the 'Gold Master' now, which is the same version that will be released on the 17th. The GM doesn't check to see if you're an apple developer, you just need to jump through a couple of more hoops to get the upgrade on your device.

yes I agree entirely. The small form factor was a major factor for many iPhone users. Steve Jobs held it as a defining principle that the phone would slip in your trouser pocket easily and be operable with just one hand and your thumb. The iOS8 fix for that (double tap to scroll the screen down) is a bit of a farce I think! Given that Apple are making two iPhones now anyway (6 & 6+), it's truly baffling why they've increased the size of the smaller one by so much.

I think I'll continue with my 4S for now, running on iOS 6 for performance reasons (I've seen a 4S running iOS 7 and can say with conviction that I'm never making the update!!), and then when enough of my apps stop working on iOS 6 I'll update to an iPhone 6, but I'll take another look at Android when I do so. It used to be the case for many people (me included) that the Android HCI was a long way behind iOS, but with the increasing complexity and lack of focus of iOS in recent years (mainly post iOS 7) and no doubt improvements from Android, that gap has closed. Steve Jobs, like Colin Chapman or Gordon Murray, was just one of those irreplaceable visionaries.

Ive made a right schoolboy error here...
Ordered the iphone 5C for the wife thinking that the min capacity was 16gb (without looking)...
Im pretty sure that 8gb will be 6gb after the "systems" capacity.

Hmmm, maybe its time to filter the music down to tracks that actually get listened too!

Ordered the 6 (16gb) at 8.40am on launch day so delivery on the 19th (following a NO vote hopefully!).

I have been trying to sell my iPhone 5 (great condition/16gb/black) on ebay - the "winner" bid £255 but didn't pay so I had a look at the recycling websites who are offering circa £185-200). I went into the Edinburgh CEX store to see how they assessed the condition (they grade them) and I got the impression that a grade A is very much like a webuyanycar offer - very few people end up with it. In any case they will pay£196 for a grade B which compared to eBay (less paypal/ebay fees) is reasonable given the hassle free service.

So, is anyone going to try and buy an iPhone on walkup on Friday? My apple store isn't far from me, so I might chance getting up at 6am and heading on down to the shopping centre. At least with this new digital reservation system i'll find out pretty quickly if i can get something or not.

I've been mulling this over. Liverpool One is 10 mins from me.
I want a 64GB 6 in slate grey. After the reservations if they only have 30 or so for people who queuing up I think I'd have to be there from midnight to have a chance. I wouldn't like to wait from 5am to be told there are none left and only gold ones left.

I'll probs get to mine at about 630, if I find there's an utterly gigantic queue, i'll just go home. Since my local store is within a shopping centre, the apple store guys told me that they would lead groups or 25 or so at a time into the main store a short while before officially opening, as it would be carnage to just open the centre doors and have a few hundred nutters running for the store.
