Meh, beta's have nearly always had these problems on iOS, Android and WP tbh. Still, I don't expect it to "better" my phone like Android updates do. I just wish it was as good as it was with iOS6. It's a lot of hassle to revert. Frustrating that they don't provide the option.
Glad you stated "nearly always". I've been running the WP8.1 Developer Preview (now with GDR1) for a while without any problems. Compared to the way iOS7 runs on mine (and most colleagues) iPhone 4Ss, Apple really do need to send their developers back to school and learn how to code efficiently.

I just hope my 4S keeps going long enough for the iPhone 6 to be available as an upgrade, currently have the 5S and 5C as options.

Just on the WP 8.1 comment. I find it sluggish and irritating. Keyboard is terrible, but it's the sluggishness that does it for me.

I sent my Samsung S4 back due to my small hands and the inability to use it one handed (work phone).

For me the iPhone 5 I have and iOS 7 is perfect but then again I don't bother personalising it too much, I just use it and in that capacity it's perfect.

Going back to iOS 8 and Yosemite, I can't wait for the time I can be working in my home office with my phone in it's cradle and answering the phone using my MBP as a speakerphone - likewise I've always hoped one day I could communicate with none iPhone users through my iPad and MBP.

For that reason and because I'm due an upgrade to my iPhone 5, it's the first time I've been genuinely excited for an overhaul, in this case Yosemite, iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 (as my 5 is battered).

In fairness the beta might not have had the release version of the power management installed in it, I do some technology beta testing and lots of the flaws that are discovered in beta are ironed out when it comes to release.

me too.

I do find it quite funny when people judge a new OS on speed/performance/bugs in a beta. True it would be better if the devs had sorted this out in dev and not testing, but there can be good reasons to do this.

This almost exactly.

As a newcomer to way of Mac, the way the phone and laptop go together is already a fantastic feature, extending the ability of the two to communicate with each other is the most appealing update for me.

I reckon I send >50% of all my iMessages from the laptop, being able to do that with 'normies' with other devices will be a boon, just a shame there is no desktop or iPad client for Whatsapp, as people seem to use that.

Interesting; I find the keyboard on the iPhone to be one of its worst features. And yours is one of the first comments I've seen claiming WP is sluggish. On the 1020 the only sluggish element is the Nokia Camera application ....

But each to their own, if everyone liked the same things the world would be pretty boring.

You don't need to be a developer but you do need to sign up to the developer program which is $99

yes
Can't stand iMessage. I used to have an iPhone and an iPad, so worth a fair bit. But then, when I sat behind the desktop, I couldn't use it? Wait? Why??

I'm using hangouts (google talk) now, so are most of my friends, works on our iPhones, iPads, Windows, Chromebooks, Android devices,...

Same goes for whatsapp... don't really get the fuzz about it as, for my use, hangouts beats it hands down.

I use iMessage on my iMac, iPad, iPhone, when I get a message it pings on them all. The only issue is if it's an SMS, then it's only on my phone although that looks like it's changing on the next release.

I know someone who is getting a divorce as a result of this "feature"... An inappropriate text conversation pinged up on his iPad at home. When his wife was using it.

Be careful out there (if you need to be careful).

LOL yep - If you're getting up to no good definately TURN IMESSAGE OFF! Also, change your itunes password regularly as icloud and emails etc can be easily accessed (I will add that I have not been caught or up to 'no good' myself! lol)

Very good.

Guy at work his 13 yo son didn't disconnect his iMessage from his mobile to the family iPad, as an April Fool his sons girlfriend sent a txt to him about her being pregnant; his dad received the message on the iPad, as you can imagine it all went a bit ballistic that night!

I bought a Lumia 630, but I'm thinking I'll buy an iP4s or iP5s used or something.

The iPhone is just so much better as a smart phone imo.
Just out of interest, and I don't completely disagree, but what is your experience on this?

I felt that iOS and Android are a lot more "mature" (ie not lacking certain obvious features), but WP has some great quality and a fresh look to the Fisher Price iOS feel. Also, a lot of the small stuff (copy paste, changing message tones, ...) has been addressed with every subsequent version. The last one I used, fully updated of course, didn't feel worse or lacking compared to my 4S. I've been contemplating to replace the 4S with a 630, just to get some more WP experience.

Biggest miss for me is certain apps that are only available on Android, so I'll probably replace it with a Moto G, but the attraction is strong.
My wife has a 4S, I had a 3GS, and I quite liked my 3GS. It never got the latest IOS updates because it was too old, but that was ok as it did seem to get crapper with time.

Lumia 630 is just annoying.

I was trying to copy something the other day and couldn't at all. Ah yes, a picture from my email (PNG) to my phone library.

No WiFi sync/backup except to the cloud it seems. I'm not sure you can back it up to a PC? Crap. If you can, it's not clear/obvious that you can.

Alarm is crap. I've hit ignore instead of snooze a handful of times already, meaning I'm late up.

Tiles are crap, until you get Wiztiles so you can make things look half nice (ie, make your own icons for web page shortcut tiles) Auto tiles don't always appear as the fav icon from a web page, but a thumbnail of the page instead.

Lack of any half decent apps. No the phones fault, but MS should make more good quality apps to fill gaps imo. Half the stuff on their store feels like it'll be a trojan or virus.

Panning around websites and I can often go 'back'... and I'm sure back is sometimes then back to the 'search' thing in Bing, which you can't then go forward from unless you remember the link you clicked. Or dig through the history.

Tabs seem to disappear sometimes when you hard close things, but other times not. It's like tabs can be tasks you can close?! There is a dis-joint between apps and browser and search to me, that makes it really hard to know where you are.

Closing a task doesn't turn off music. You then have to either find it, or press volume buttons (also near lock, so maybe lock it), to then be able to press a button to pause it only. Jeez. How hard is this? If you want to play music, don't close the task. That is pretty logical to me.

All my MSN contacts are in the phone, but I don't want some of them on there, but others I do want on there. Some have numbers, some don't. I can only seem to filter by having numbers or not which is a bit pants. Filtering or meta-data tags for 'phone' would make a lot of sense. I talk to loads of people on MSN, but I only want a select few on the phone.

No DNLA support, so I can't watch my PC/media content on the phone. I can if I buy an app, but that is stupid when I already bought WP 8.1. I didn't have to buy SW to do these tasks with Win XP, 7, 8 on my laptop etc.

No timer/stopwatch. Sounds trivial, but all the apps need the phone to be unlocked I think. That is annoying if you want the phone to auto-lock.

Passwords on the unlock page have no letters on the numbers, so if you remember your password as a string of text it's a real pain to remember it.

Bing search is crap. In the first week of owning the phone every time I tried to search for something to do with Lumia 630 XYZ (something to figure out how it works etc), it'd come up with reviews, previews or resellers of the phone. Google managed to give the relevant answers near the top of the first page.

Big search also seems to limit image quality on image searches. It also stops scrolling with new images after a while with a hard stop. Wheras Google will go forever if you want. Why?

There is probably loads more that just stops me using the phone for anything half useful day to day. Great to tinker around with but if you wanted to do anything half serious or important I'd look elsewhere.

OK the iPhone isn't perfect either, not by a long way... but I think they have most of the bits (or did) right.

Maybe it'll get better with time, but I really don't get why it can't all be fixed in a few months.
Why does it take years? This is MS, not some small company. Yet we see all these app developers make great apps in no time at all... but they are iffy because they can't be properly integrated into the software (ie, locking on the alarms/timers etc)
WP8 had been out years, and WP8.1 is meant to be amazing, but it still feels like it's got half the features and UX gloss missing.

Shame because the phone hardware itself makes Apple's iPhone look stupidly expensive and crude with fixed expensive memory etc.

But from day one with my 3GS when I bought it, I never had a problem. It just worked as I expected it to and I never had to read up how to do anything... WP8.1, almost everything I've had to read up... and it's hard to find the info to read up.

The worst bit of all is you expect all the things like DLNA and a decent alarm, and WiFi local backup to be staples of any modern smart phone, especially a Windows one... and to find them missing is just a joke really.

I still think that most modern phones are crap though. UI/UX designers seem to have too much swap over the engineers imo. Flashy looks go before functionality, to the point functionality is screwed just so it looks fancy.
Great, if you just sit and look at it... not so great if you want to do tasks fast without any frills or distracting tweens or fades or swipes or whatever else.

Sorry for being ranty but it just peeves me off no end that I've bought an MS product to escape Apple iron-handed control freakery, and yet MS are trying to copy them! Fools.

same with photo stream - someone i know got a battering from his missus after a weekend out with the boys due to some inappropriate photos of other women appearing on his iPad photo stream that had been taken on his iPhone.

He'd not taken the photos of the ladies in the club as his mates had nicked his phone but he got the full blame until his single mate confessed to taking them...

It's more to do with the poor integration of user accounts on the iPad.
A tablet is a family device, it should just have a selection for the "user" in the unlock like on android and windows devices.
