After a little more investigation I think I'll head for TSOhost. I hadn't twigged that google apps didn't provide the hosting and is basically just a 'front end', relying on the actual domain still being elsewhere (or hosted by one of their hosting partners) and just redirecting traffic googlewards. As I've always used thunderbird anyway for my email I'm not sure that migrating to google apps will add much. TSOhost should do the trick nicely though.

TSO Host/Vidahost have out sourced a lot of their support it seems. My last encounter a few weeks ago was not good, however when the original team in Slough got hold of the job it was fixed pretty quick. I just hope their expansion doesn't means things get worse as they have been a breath of fresh air up until this point. Reliability has remained rock solid mind.

Does anyone know if Vidahost/TSOHost have recently been sold?

I got out of reg 1 a few months back. Utter rubbish. I had so many domains I couldn't email as someone on the shared server was spamming so anything fromn that IP was blocked. Apparenty I should expect that!
Raised tickets were a waste of time in the end.
I've had no issues since elsewhere and its cheaper.

Has that come about in the last 6 months. I notice they've changed their billing control panel which is, IMO, better (though some pages don't currently work), but their support has got a whole lot worse. You used to get support within an hour that would resolve your problem. Now they've gone to the 'big company' model of first line support getting back to you within a couple of hours nearly always asking for more information. The actual problem rarely gets resolve until second line support step in after a day or so.

Reg1 have also just got out of the Domain Registrar game too. I have a sled of domains coming up for renewal and Reg1 are not making it easy orintuitive to transfer to their parent / preferred partner, so are going to lose business as I may as well transfer to TSO where I am hosting most of my domains now.

Really? They are no longer XKCD/806 compliant? Dammit!

After a disaster with Reg1 I moved 50+ domains and hosting over to TSO this weekend.
Not sure if I was lucky but I had problems with one particular domain which was changing its email provider to Exchange at the same time... TSO were very helpful in getting it sorted out quickly both over the telephone and via email. - I would have been dead in the water if I had to deal with Reg1 - they responded to an urgent ticket nearly 24 hours later...

Fingers crossed TSO don't go the same way as Reg1 : (

Sadly they will. They'll get bought out and buy an F40 and get fat (hey Jamie!) just like Reg1, and then we'll move on to the next hungry company who actually offer a decent service and good customer support. Sadly. frown

Just had an email through from one of the two web hosting companies I use, ElasticHosts (the other being Vidahost). They've been acquired by Paragon!

I have to admit I have my concerns about Paragon given their recent acquisition. Will have to see how things go...

Another thing worth noting is that Register1 are getting out of the domain registrar business. I have several domains up for renewal and have transferred one to TSO, as that's who is hosting it anyway, and also they are actually slightly cheaper for a .com domain.

In fact, given the mention of Paragon and the fact that Register1 customers are being advised to move to Paragon for hosting (but with no painless way of doing so), I wouldn't be surprised if Register1 is dead and buried in a matter of months, Borg assimilation style.

Just discovered this (because one of my domains has started bouncing emails). Did anybody get an email about this? Not one simple email saying my domain was about to expire. What a shower of ste.

Seriously? confused

Not one email? You must have some serious spam filters.

Absolutely nothing. Just standard Gmail spam filtering, never had an issue before, and nothing in the spam folder. Usually I have daily e-mails in the 2 weeks running up to it... Not to mention first email about 2 months in advance...

I got none of my emails from my domain name company for one URL. This in the first few months of 2014. The name expired then someone bought it, wanting $10,000 for it. The email address I used was from BY Yahoo! and I'd had considerable problems with it around that time, that was when they suggested it was duff adverts on their site that were compromised. I'd never clicked on one but was told by one of the blokes I spoke with when trying to sort out lack of response, that I must have. Now I find that they were hacked and 500 million, 500 million plus, names with lots of personal data, including passwords, were 'compromised', ie accessed.

It seems that the emails from the domain company had been sent. They said that they followed their normal practice of sending two well beforehand and then one nearer the time. In my case they had sent four, none of which had bounced. But, it would appear, they'd been diverted. Yet their email address was in my contacts.

This is, I am told, not a unique attack, if indeed it was an attack.

So if no emails get through, it might not be the sender's error. Keep a record of renewal dates to ensure you are not asked for $10,000.

As an aside, I used to allow my host to control the URLs but read a report where the host company assumed ownership of the name on renewal and then was bought out with the new company demanding fees for all the maintenance and such. The matter was resolved by the magazine for the one complaining but I wondered how many others were affected.

Well I have got it sorted, but what a palaver.

It would seem that Register1 for some reason have changed the admin email address on the account to an old one, set up over 10 years ago (my wife's maiden name!). I know for a fact that it was changed as I used it to send myself a new password recently, and all the reminder and acknowledgement emails were sent to the new address 3 years ago!

Bizarrely, it seems there are 2 passwords, one for the control panel, and one for the domain management. They sent a password reset email to me and I managed to change the tag that way. Then renewed with TSOhost and set up email forwarding, all set within the hour.

What I can't figure is why Register1 would revert to an old email address. The account is long since dead, as said it has been out of use for 11 years! Anyway, shot of them now and will be moving my own domains across shortly.

Just to bring this back from the dead.

I've been decreasingly impressed with Vidahost/Tsohost. Support emails are now being answered after hours and hours, sometimes even days. Their cloud hosting is pretty rubbish with performance - several optimised Wordpress sites I and my clients have on there are slow to load and I quite often have problems with time-outs and Internal Server Errors (I believe this is the MySQL connection timing out).

So today I've started to move to Krystal - they're a company I used years and years ago when I worked for another company. They're what Vida/Tso used to. UK based customer support, always on the end of the phone, chat window, email. Quick to respond and helpful. I've started to move sites over to a cloud hosting account and even without optimisation Wordpress sites are running very quickly.

Thoroughly recommended if anyone needs basic hosting.

I've noticed TSO getting worse customer service wise too.
They were great at first whereas now you can be waiting ages for any response.
Have had sites go down quite a bit too
