...in which case I've found my next phone.

It'll end a run of HTC fanboyism:

G1
G2/Hero
Desire
One X
One M8

HTC would have to pull something pretty spectacular out of the bag in the next couple of months if I'm going to stick with them.

I have a Nexus 7 and a Samsung Tab S 8.4 - the Nexus is my go-to device of the two, the Samsung is a little laggy by comparison and I don't really like TouchWiz but it DOES have 4G so it stays for now. I might find a way to get rid of both and get a new Nexus tablet with 4G connection which would be perfect.

There is some kind of HTC event today in Brooklyn I think. Although I may have dreamed that.
Seems you're right: https://twitter.com/htc

My M8's doing well at 18 months old but like you, I don't see the M9 as any form of upgrade worth making. As I say, they'll need to come up trumps to turn my head from the (also metal) 6P...

Just watched it, I wasn't fully concentrating but the new phone is called the HTC One A9 and basically looks very similar to an iPhone 6 (no bad thing). They spoke of the excellent camera/screen etc. as they always do. Didn't hear anything game changing but as I said I was only half listening. Will probably get one.
Midrange phone, sits below M. Looks nice enough but isn't making my man-parts tingle.

SD slot is a plus. I'm really unsure why all phones don't come with them; the cash gouging for built-in 64 or 128Gb is a bit off given how cheap memory is. My 64Gb mSD card was about £25 I think.

I've had 6.0 on my N7 for a few weeks and it's one of the reasons I'm keen on the Nexus 6P. It's matured into a very nice OS.

A couple of colleagues have got S6s and they're endlessly complaining about how slow the phones have become over time. Seems to be an issue with Touchwiz, my Tab S 8.4 is terrible in that respect too.

Just stop using touchwiz then and install another launcher like Google Now for example.
You can't. Touchwiz affects every part of the interface and is ingrained, the launcher is the least of the issues (I'm already using Google Now on my Tab S btw)...

What's remarkable is how Samsung can take such amazing hardware and make it run so badly. I've just put 6.0 on my M8 and it's as slick as my 6P. I actually wondered why I upgraded the other night, the M8 is that good...

I think you'd like the 6P... Its AMOLED screen is actually Samsung's latest WQHD display and the camera, whilst not quite up there with the S6's, is still excellent: http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=5&i...

My only criticism of it is the lack of SD card. That said 4G coverage where I am is excellent and I tend to stream most stuff - mainly music - from my PC without needing to store it on the phone. If I run into space issues I'll sell this one and buy a 64Gb (EE only have the 32Gb on contract, or did when I upgraded).

Add in the fast charging and the incredible battery life and overall I'm very pleased. It's not quite as 'premium' feeling as the One M8 but it's very close.

If people are looking to move on, I ended up with a 6P a couple of months ago. Bloat free Android is amazing. Absolutley love it!
Agreed, my experience with 6.0 on my Nexus 7 was what drove a lot of my decision to get the 6P.

I think it's telling how many of us have gone M8 > 6P and are happy with the move!

Mine updated without an issue, shame to hear you're running into issues with it.

I would go the reset route as JT recommends, see if that solves things. Regarding the rotate - it never did that on the home screen in 5.x that I can recall? It was always portrait...

I don't remember it rotating either. Not on my HTC One...
Actually I'm 100% certain it never did.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, I've gone to the Nexus 6P from my M8 and very pleased with it.

Part of me wants to just drop Android completely because I suspect if I get a 6P such maladies will befall me in another years time. Meanwhile, OH's iPhone 5 soldiers on smooth as silk (granted its toy-like proportions are no good and the battery life is woeful).
It will be fine. My Nexus 7 (2013) is running Android 6.0 and is fast and buttery-smooth. It was a major convincer in deciding to get the 6P and I haven't regretted it yet, save wishing EE would have offered the 64Gb as well. The 6P really is as good as the reviews say it is.

Regarding earphones, I bought Jaybird Bluebud Xs and they're superb. Highly recommended.

I considered waiting for the S7 but my experience with Touchwiz on my Tab S 8.4 means I'll never get another Samsung. If I could get one with vanilla Android I'd be tempted but everyone I know who's had a Samsung has complained about terrible performance degradation over time. It's a shame as their hardware is good, just let down by terrible software.

Security was another key consideration for me; both my Nexus 7 and 6P are running the March security patches from Google. My Tab S 8.4 is still on Android 5.0 and hasn't seen a single security update in the last year.

Yep, 6P is smaller and even better...

My M8 was also mint after 2 years, case but no screen protector. Just sold it for £100 to a friend who's very pleased with it.

I agree. The big draw for me was stock Android after my experience with it on my Nexus 7.

I've swapped the Samsung launcher out on my Tab S for exactly that reason...

Well sadly I think marshmallow has killed my M8. It's gone quite slow and laggy browsing the net and switching apps. It's actually become annoying to use.

I'm coming to the end of my contract and pre-mm I was considering keeping the phone and going sim only. Instead I have a 6P arriving tomorrow.

Oh well. Was good while it lasted. Nice phone, borked by mm and a dodgy battery.
Something is very wrong with your phone I think. My M8 was great on 6.0.
