Most reviews I read marked the HTC one down a lot for the camera, but the main failing I find with phone cameras is their inability to take a decent photo in low ight (with the exception of one of the old Sony Ericson K series that actually had a proper flash) whcih it seems ot excel at, while not being noticeably worse in good light unless you massively zoom it in to the photo, which I generally don't.

HTC One is a very good phone. Really enjoyed mine. Would love to have been able to better customise the news story window feature. Looking forward to seeing this and the new Samsung.

Just to chip in on the camera - I've had a black and a silver HTC one, and the cameras are shockingly bad - especially when compared to an iPhone 5S or something of that ilk.

The Nexus 4 is the only phone I've had which was worse, and the Nexus 5 is not much better.

I've got a HTC One, and would disagree that the photos are shockingly bad.

I've been watching the leaks for the 'M8' with great interest.

Currently I have a Galaxy S3, which was my first foray into Android. Good phone, but a little slow now.

Two of my friends got HTC Ones last year and it really is a fantastic looking phone. I suppose the main things that draw me to the HTC are the screen quality, the front facing speakers and the metal chassis.

The only negative I can think of is that one of my mates has had to send his back for repair 3 times due to the speakers breaking.

The new one is due out just before my contract ends, so I am really looking forward to this. Seen quite a few rumours that it's likely to have expandable memory, which is a huge positive for me.

I've been waiting for this announcement for a while, as my One X contract is up for renewal next month. I'll go for a grey one I think.

Camera 2.1mp/4.0mp?
More mega pixels isn't always better.
AFAIK they've gone for a better sensor and sensitivity instead.

IMHO 16megapixels in a phone's a bit like putting 1000 bhp in a commuting Focus. Great headlines, but without the drag strip, brakes and chassis, a bit pointless smile
This. For me, a 4mp camera with good sensitivity would be a major selling point over a 10+mp one.

Just to counter, two of my friends and 3 of my colleagues have Ones which have all been faultless...

Talking about the camera, one of my closest friends uses an HTC One and is a serial snapper. He regularly emails me full resolution pictures of holidays, parties etc.
I've always found the photos to be entirely reasonable, personally. Maybe not the best out there, but frankly completely acceptable.

The other key point is the performance of the camera in lower light - something where the One is ahead of most other cameraphones imo.

How good do they need to get? These were taken on my One X, so 'old' tech now. I was particularly impressed with it capturing the fireworks so well given the dark/light fluctuation, as well as focussing etc:

These were both straight off the camera, auto-uploaded into Dropbox so no editing or tweaking.

My ONE has been excellent, probably the most reliable phone I've had so far, certainly think the M8 will replace it once I'm up for renewal.

For those who insist on saying how bad the HTC one camera is, I suggest you try reading Brian Klug's review of the HTC one camera on anandtech, the only site whose opinion I trust.

I started using cameras in 1977, using a fully manual SLR and a light meter. I have had four iPhones, three Samsung galaxy's and two Sony's and the best camera in a smartphone I have ever used out of all of them it's the HTC ones. If you get bad results, you either had a faulty camera or you don't understand how to use a smartphone camera.

The HTC One (M8) will feature two cameras on the rear of the device, Pocket-lint can confirm.

Talking to sources familiar with the matter, Pocket-lint has learnt that the new flagship smartphone from HTC, due to be announced on 25 March, will still feature the same camera sensor that is in the 2013 HTC One but with also a second 2-megapixel camera sensor.

The job of the second camera will be to enhance bokeh and enable users to replace the background in any picture they take.

Bokeh (pronounced bo-kay) is the blur, or the beauty of the blur in the out-of-focus elements of a photo and it is something many portrait photographers strive for. It gives a greater sense of depth to photos and helps the subject have a lot more "punch".

The new technology benefits will be captured and controlled via an app HTC is currently working on. The system will be the first of its kind on a smartphone, but looks to work in a similar way to a dual-camera prototype Toshiba demonstrated before Christmas.

Hearing that this isn't going to be announced at MWC next week but on 25th March...

I can see why they might defer, the S5's announcement has the potential to drown out the new One. That said, I do think they need to beat Samsung to market to be in with a shot of success.

Also hearing rumors of an HTC smart watch by Christmas...

I am about to send mine back for the third time for this problem, where as a colleague of mine has had no issues, seems to be a bit of a lottery.

I've had my HTC one since June - and in that time no problems. It's still as fast as the day it came out of the box.

The case has a little dent where it was dropped onto concrete, and a small, superficial scratch on the screen - it lives in my pocket along with my keys.

As a multimedia device it is unparalleled - video and music is wonderful. It also has a premium feel, people are still saying how nice it feels in the hand, IMHO HTC got the shape and size just right.

The camera takes snaps, good in low light, ZOE is an absolute blast and the showreel capability is brilliant. I'd argue that the majority of pictures taken on a mobile are posted on Facebook and aren't blown up to A3 and framed on the wall.

Best phone I have ever had.

The M8 is going to have to be very special to beat it!

SD.

Yeah, my other mate hasn't had a single issue with his so I guess it is a bit pot luck as you say.

Getting quite excited for the release now bounce

Still have to wait until May/June time to replace my contract, but I'm hoping the price may have dropped a little by then.

Not a fan of the idea of more powerful speakers getting built in to mobile phones these days. It means we're going to be subjected to even more st music from people using their phone to play music without having the decency to wear headphones. I fully accept that I'm turning in to my father.
