I like these funky new colours for dot case display through the update I got today!
You can customize it to use one of your photos. Very very cool😎

Has anyone added an anti virus? Any recommendations as to which one?

I'm using Avira which ties in with my Avira Internet Security at home.

Is there any need for anti-virus? What are people worried about? I have no opinion either way but have never bothered in the past.

I've used AVG in the past. Mainly because my phones are usually rooted and I've been known to try out the odd apk from various sources.

Is it actually worth getting an AV for the phone, particularly if you don't download any dodgy software?

I've recently been having trouble with Daydreaming (when the phone is on charge, it displays a floating/screensaving clock).

It started off working fine, but following a system update a while ago, it's become a bit problematic - it seems that something keeps waking the phone up just as it's about to fade into daydream mode.

I can usually sort it by killing everything via a Task Killer, but it's a nuisance as it used to work and I can't see what is causing the wakeup. I use it as a night clock when I'm away from home.

Anyone else come across this?

I use lookout. I've also got Folder locker and Where's my droid installed and set up. I'm pretty sure that's all the security I need.

Is there a way to get pictures without having to focus on either inside or outside (bright light) ?

It makes great photo's outside, and good photo's inside, but i seem to struggle to get a combination of both.

I was in this bar in Bournemouth recently which looked nice on the inside, and had great views all round of the seafront, so i tried to take a picture, but i could either get just the inside of the bar, without being able to see the sea due to the backlight, or i could focus (tap the screen) on the windows, but then the inside was very dark :

Is there a way and/or option on the camera to solve the above problem and create the picture i want, showing both the inside and the outside nicely ?

From a review I read this was one of the weaknesses compared to the S5 - balancing dark and light areas.

Try turning on HDR and manually adjusting exposure to -1. This seems to be get the best results for me.

It's a limitation of the dynamic range of the sensor. This is common with all digital (and film) cameras (although different cameras have different ranges). The human eye does a really good job of adjusting the sensitivity of the eye for different areas of the scene. This is why if you stared at that scene for a few moments, then looked away and blinked, you would see dark areas where the windows used to be.

The answer is to meter for the outside (picture 2) add then add more light inside (via use of a powerful flash), this is obviously impractical in most situations.

Another option is to try and find a point in between the darkest and lightest to give you the best chance of getting it all within range. In the scene above you might try various bright points within the bar and see what the results look like.

As mentioned above the best option may be to use the HDR mode, this will take several pictures and combine them to give you the best of both worlds (in theory). Imagine your two pictures above with the windows from the second one and the bar from the first one. It's an effect that can work well but can end up looking a bit weird.

Incidentally the next version of Android (Android L, which has been confirmed for the M8 once it comes out) will allow RAW files to be saved. These will have much more latitude for post processing so it may be possible to achieve your desired result using a single shot and a bit of trickery in the computer afterwards.

I got my M8 on Friday after having an M7 for the previous 12 months. I hadn't even handled one before it turned up.

First thought was that it is slightly larger than I expected, I had assumed it was almost identical in size to the M7 when in fact it is noticeably bigger. Having said that, I am used to it already.

I very much like the 'motion gestures' to unlock the phone but it would be nice if these were customisable out of the box. The Duo camera is very good but the 3D tilt thingy and the dandelion type modes are massively gimmicky.

Battery-wise I have been impressed, it put up with a day of almost constant use, streaming the test match via Sky Sports and TuneIn as well as usual web browsing and messaging. It remains to be seen how that degrades over time, my M7 was ridiculous by the end, the last 40% of the battery was as good as useless.

Overall I am very happy with one fairly significant fly in the ointment. I have a pair of polarised RayBans and with them on and the phone in portrait orientation, the screen appears completely black. Turning the phone to landscape or removing the sungalsses obviously sorts it but it's a pain and wasn't the case with the M7. I can live with it as I only wear them about 20 days a year.

I'm off on holiday shortly I need access to my emails, calls and texts only. I don't want to get stung for needless data roaming changes on any apps or what not I have, so am I better of switching off data roaming and checking periodically or putting the phone into extreme power saver mode which I am led to believe kills all apps and just leaves me with emails texts and a phone?

Depends - Vodafone do a deal where it is a flat rate per day for any data. I think it is £2.
I am sure the other networks do the same.

If you can't get a similar deal I'd turn data roaming off then turn it on when you want to check emails.

The £2 per day gives you your UK Contract allowance in Europe at no extra cost - I have used this all year as working in Germany
