Hi

I'm looking to connect an Ipad 2 to a TV. I've seen various cables, adapters etc, not sure whether to buy one of these ( they seem very cheap which in an odd way is putting me off ) fr just to buy Apple TV.

Any thoughts / advice or recommendations of cables / adapter would be very welcome.

Cheers

  • If* you have a fast broadband connection (eg BT infinity fast) Apple TV is worth getting in its own right. Being able to ply stuff from your ipad via it is a nice bonus.
Without the fast BB connection, get a cable.

Thanks Greg, that answer that - our BB connection is at best sporadic

I might be wrong here Gregg66, but I don't believe you need any kind of broadband connection to play stuff from your ipad to a ATV? The ATV connects to the ipad directly without any need for a separate router IIRC

Your iPad and Apple TV both need to be on the same WiFi network for it to work.

Remember that whichever way you do it, don't assume you can view everything that's on the iPad on the TV.

Certain things are blocked for copyright reasons which I have never managed to understand, such as sky go

You don't need broadband for Apple TV to stream iPad, you do need WiFi though. 99% of the time you have WiFi you'll have broadband, but it is possible to have internal WiFi networks.

As mentioned, some stuff won't stream! Thing like BBC iPlayer etc, really annoying!!

That's true, but then you're paying £100 for something that you will use as if it is a wireless cable. A cable is a lot cheaper.

You won't get any of the real benefits of ATV (which, IMO, with fast BB are well worth having).

no sky go does not transmit from iphone or ipad apps. however it does appear to work if you do it from a mac laptop/computer.

something in the app stops it from being sent via airplay to apple tv. but if you watch sky go on a laptop/ computer its all done via the internet and not through an app and you can mirror this display onto the tv.

We have a HDMI adapter and cable for our Ipad 2. It was a cheap jobbie off ebay.

Works excellent although the only downside is that because the Ipad is a 4:3 ratio screen, when it displays on a 16:9 widescreen TV, you get black boarders down the left and right of the screen.

I'm guessing Apple TV wont have this problem, but as above, you'll have the added problem that not everything steams through Apple TV. With a cable, it's just a replica of what's on the Ipad screen, so everything works.

I think that's the way we'll go, thanks for the info

apple TV is a decent bit of kit, even with some of the blocking issues.. I have been trying to Smart another one of my TV'swith a do it all box.. but they all block something unfortunately..

I like the Apple TV I have plugged to router with BT comtrend connectors and also to server basic machine upstairs,
so using Serter to Me app can access all movies music upstairs, and with stuff on the Ipda play over system downstairs, works great..

also if your getting one, check groupon, every now and again they come up for £75 on there, I'm considering another one for elsewhere in house, as you can run more than one...
