I have a 10 year old Dell running XP..
I have basic computer skills and decided it makes sense to buy a new desktop rather that upgrade my old computer.
I have read the various posts re. upgrading to windows 8 or Ubuntu or Linux but do not have the confidence to go down that route.
Thinking of spending say £400/£500 just for mainly surfing the net ,emailing,(no gaming).
What do you suggest ?
Another Dell and if so which model or do Currys have a good deal on a suitable model ?
Thanks.

Your best benchmark is a basic Dell and see if anyone can beat it. Often the Dell Outlet itself will be the winner, but the final decision is yours.

Your starter for ten: Inspiron 3000 i3/8GB/1TB drive/Win8.1, £399

and you'll probably want to add a screen if your old one is ten years old.

Considering what's in them, why do manufacturers still use such relatively big boxes?

There are other sizes. Even Dell have a smaller size tower. But ATX is the standard size and layout and you can fit any standard graphics card, etc.

Can be dearer to make stuff smaller and things like getting heat out and airflow become more of an issue.
