Now now I was only linking to the link that didn't work.
Just go and buy the bleedin thing you wanted info on it will probably last you years n years smile
Sorry, wasn't meaning to single you out - several others suggested solutions outside of my spec wink

As it happens, I may be stretching the budget a bit - the aluminium Toshiba with Nvidia gpu has taken my fancy.

Girlfriend has a Toshiba and we use them in school (I'm a teacher), the OH's cost around the £450 mark. I don't personally like them, but i prefer them to my awful 17" Samsung I have - the trackpad has been stuttery since day one and even with 8gb ram it regularly freezes when I have a few windows open.

Came from a very expensive Sony Vaio so maybe my expectations are skewed. Next one will be a lenovo after endless recommendations and my housemate's one when I was in Uni was excellent, the recent Vaios I've seen seem to have gone downhill significantly. Maybe a mac.

Off the wall recommendation here - I also own a surface RT and as a 'microsoft office machine' or for browsing it's fantastic. Might be worth considering a 'pro'

I didn't take it like that at all I was just having some fun.
one solid bit of advice on whatever you choose - TRY THE KEYBOARD AS MUCH AS YOU CAN-
Does the key return feel "right for you"
Is the Key "spread" good - fat fingers etc
Does it flex in the machine if it does does that bother you
Are the keys where you need them to be ie the delete button is the return key big enough for you

I can think of a few people we know who didn't really do this and then complained afterwards.
Also diminishing returns on Laptops can be significant just do your research as much as you can but seriously "interface" with the bloody thing as much as you can before buying.

The Acer that this laptop will replace lasted me 5 years and had a really good keyboard and track pad, the only thing letting it down was the AMD processor which always ran fairly hot and sucked the battery dry. I put Ubuntu on it as soon as it arrived and will probably do the same with the next one as I'm not a fan of Windows.

I don't know which Toshiba you've been looking at, but the one I got in December is a 17 inch with the Nvidia GPU. Its an S70 I think. The one that is part aluminium and not completely aluminium.

If you want to pick my brains about it feel free.

Mine has 12gb RAM, 500gb HDD, Intel i5 processor, and the 2gb Nvidia GT740M.

This one, which does sound a lot like yours. I guess the main question would be 'would you buy it again ?' wink

Yep that looks very similar. Mine has a smaller hard drive but larger amount of RAM just due to it being 'custom' made.

I would definitely. I've had for nearly half a year and its been great. I love the fact I can plug it into my 50 inch LCD and extend the screen. I've been playing Wolfenstein: The New Order on it and it looks great (720p, with settings near full)

The only problem I'd say is that the Satellite logo came off one time when I used the laptop with wet hands, and the touchpad has been different to what I've been used to. But now I've got the hang of its very good. (the left and right mouse buttons are part of the touchpad so it can catch you out a bit)

I got the backlit keyboard which is brilliant. Even though I can touch type it just helps sometimes.

I didn't get the 1080p screen, as I didn't believe it was worth an extra $100 to what I paid. Resolution at 1600x900 is brilliant and I've had no problems.

It feels well made, and I haven't had any major issues with it so far. The keyboard stopped working once for an unknown reason, but I just reset it in the BIOS settings and had no bother after that.

I paid $800 which I thought for the specification was a fantastic deal. I looked at other laptops but for the price this one came out on top.

I've been very impressed with what games can run on this as well. I had NBA 2K14 playing on it which looks good (although annoyingly I've heard the PC version is a port of the X360/PS3 version, and not the fancy XBONE/PS4 version)

I can run Battlefield 4 single player at 25fps with pretty good settings. I've also been playing Far Cry 3 with good results as well.

We've got a couple, one of which is 4 or 5 years old now and they've been really excellent.

Thanks for that, you've pretty much decided me on that one now smile

Glad to help.

A good little bonus, is if you download the Origin client, you can purchase Battlefield 3 for free. Then download it to your new laptop to test it out.

I've been playing a bit of multiplayer on it and can run most things on high or ultra and it looks pretty damned nice.

https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/battlefield...

Here is the link, its only free for another couple of days. But you'd just to need to 'purchase it' and then download it later whenever you liked.

Still no laptop frown I've been keeping an eye on a few different ones and have made a few changes to my original spec, 15" screens are now back on the table as long as they are full HD (1920x1080). I'm prepared to spend a bit more too, upto £700 now but it does still have to come from Amazon as most of the cost will be met with gift vouchers. Bearing this in mind, does anyone have anything bad to say about HP machines as on the face of it, this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-15-j142na-15-6-inch-Notebook-Natural/dp/B00KU2K0RG/ref=sr_1_18?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1410289815&sr=1-18#productDetails) would seem to be a very good machine at a very reasonable price.

We've run Satellite Pro's at work for years, probably had 25-30 different machines. They started off fantastic and we swore by them, however over the past 5years I have found the quality/finish of the machine has deteriorated massively and the last couple machines caused no end of troubles (issues with hardware and tosh drivers).

All machines we had were top of the range Satellite Pro's normally 17in.

After having enough of the tosh machines we went to Dell and had XPS 17's and Inspiron 17SE's. After 2 years of further issues we have bitten the bullet and replaced all laptops with Macbook Pro 15 Retinas. Its only been days since we made the change, but so far its the best decision I have ever made with regard to our equipment.

If you go back to Tosh and Dell, Id recommend a Dell machine everyday. They are typically cheaper and whilst foreign their customer service is pretty bloody good. We have had technicians out to fix on site several times and they have never had any worries with replacing major parts all under the standard warranty. Tosh didnt want to admit the issues we were having existed, even though they were written all over their forums from various users.

A lot of Toshibas running Windows 8 have problems with the touchpad constantly disabling. You can sort it for a while by resetting the BIOS (or plug in a mouse and reset the touchpad driver). It's a driver conflict that's been going on for ages and they seem unable or unwilling to fix.

Like most laptops, you get what you pay for. The high end ones are very nice machines, but the ones built to an Argos specification with a 1Ghz AMD CPU and 1Gb RAM trying to run Win 8 are garbage.

Just to counter the above comment, I've had my Toshiba laptop since December and never had a single issue with the touchpad.
