HP would be at the very bottom of my list!

My choice would come from Asus, Lenovo, or Toshiba (probably in that order too).

So what put you off HP?

Of all the laptops I have had over the years, HP is the only brand which have had (non HDD) hardware problems.

I found that recent Toshiba laptops do not need you to press FM+F5 key to disable the touchpad.. The default is that just pressing F5 knocks out the touchpad. One of the F keys, F10 perhaps, disables WiFi. Had loads of calls with this after accidental keypresses, fix was to enable requirement for pressing Fn and F key together in the Tosh software. HTH

Like most laptops, you get what you pay for. The high end ones are very nice machines, but the ones built to an Argos specification with a 1Ghz AMD CPU and 1Gb RAM trying to run Win 8 are garbage.
I have this fault.

It's pigging annoying.

I would go Lenovo....Although I have to admit I'm slightly biased. Talking to customers, the first line help desk is pretty good and unless you have red wine running out off the bottom of the laptop the warranty is worth the paper its written on.

The HP went up in price, so I've pretty much settled on the Lenovo Z710 which seems to get some very good reviews and is fairly high spec for the price.

Thanks for all the help smile

With all the Tosh knowledge here, I was going to purchase this bad boy:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H7911TQ/ref=...

For and i5 with 8Gigs and 1Tb and HD4600 graphics it looks good.

BUT, does it have a scroll bar on the touch pad? My current Packard Bell does and I spend a lot of time on the tubes and the lack of this will annoy me. Any help please? Thanks.

Current topic for me. smile

I know nothing about computers, except that I hated my experience with windows 8

My trusty old laptop has died tonight, so I need another one.

Don't want to spend much - 500 quidish. I don't use it for gaming or anything. Will want microsoft office etc as is a working / internet surfing machine / tool.

So - what do I buy?

(Last time I had to buy one I went to John Lewis, picked the prettiest one at about 500 quid price point and got lumbered with Win8. Don't want that again, and sure I can do better!)

Thanks for any help

Just to resurrect this thread, I finally made my choice:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Y50-70-15-6-inch-Ul...

The £100 off + another 20% cashback from Lenovo made it too good to ignore. Coupled with paying for half of it with my gift vouchers it means I'm getting a very high spec laptop for very little money smile

Thanks for all the recommendations on this thread, I probably wouldn't have looked at a Lenovo otherwise.

I was wondering about the term HD the other day, and thought that it was a bit old hat nowadays.

Couldn't they just abbreviate it to Ultra Definition? Isn't the term 'high' implied?
