I've come to the conclusion that the heart rate monitor on the Gear Live is a waste of time when you are exercising as lots of the reviews say you need to be still for 5-10 seconds while it picks up your heartrate. I'll stick to a chest strap TBH.

Yeah, I've been reading into this a bit more. I think the best bet will be to ignore the heart sensor and use a Bluetooth strap paired with the phone.

It looks like RunKeeper is getting into the wearables segment too, so fingers crossed everything should just work together and it will be possible to display the heart rate on the watch screen. http://blog.runkeeper.com/2201/this-just-in-runkee...

Sweet, thanks for that. Strava is also getting in on Wear as well. Current;y using a Motoactv but it has been discontinued and don't know how long the portal will be up for. I use it for running and golf but this is more of an everyday device which appeals. Being able to check shopping lists etc without pulling out your phone would be great. (I know, I live on the edge hehe)

I bought a Gear 2 Neo on the day that the Wear was announced, deliberately because of the battery life. After a week and a half of it i think they really are quite limited. Superb for notifications, looking at weather, dismissing a call etc. But to use them for anything else it really is a pain on those small screens. Will be interesting to see Apple's interpretation - although I suspect will be similar to an iPod Nano.

Quick update, the heat rate monitor is definitely crap. It's OK if you're sitting still. Went for a bike ride last night, even when taking it steady, the thing wouldn't register, the slightest amount of sweat or dirt or even movement seems to kill it! Stick to a chest strap. Still loving the watch though smile

Runkeeper worked nicely with my pebble, so they should be picking up this stuff pretty soon.

I wonder if the Samsung's are sold out yet...

Excellent, can you let us know how you get on in a few days especially the fitness side?

Sure thing. I've already decided the step counter is rubbish, as I gained about 300 steps on the drive home! I guess it misinterpreted the sweeping bends and rapid gear changes. I've probably gained another couple of hundred from drying the dishes after dinner!

It was quite novel having it buzz on the way home, and when I looked it was notifying me of a new email. I wonder how the law interprets these things if I was to use it to answer a call and was spotted by an officer?

I'm only assuming that being that it's not hand held you'd be within the law.

Moto 360 news. Engadget have a few photos of it next to the LG watch and on its wireless charging station.

Think the Moto one looks horrible, easily worst of the current bunch.

I can't see these watches taking off, my experience is that they are more annoying than they are satisfying.

It's very early days in the world of wearables but the good news is the three big players (wear, gear, iwatch) are making quick progress. Developers are seeing the benefits and use cases and i am seeing some very interesting apps etc in development.

There are still size/style issues to overcome but the internet suggests Apple have this covered.

I think the Moto looks OK. Certainly looks more like a 'traditional watch' than the Samsung or LG models, and the wireless charging will be useful too. Having to clip on the little charging adapter to my Samsung is a pain, and it's just something else I'm likely to forget or lose if I go away.

I don't know how much the Moto will cost though. That round screen can't be cheap, but if it costs too much more than the Samsung (which is £10 more than the LG), then it may not sell that well.

But as mentioned, Apple will undoubtedly enter the market and 'invent' the wearable, which will give all of them a boost.

Yeah, I'm sure they will produce something a bit more desirable and also probably improve usability, but I still have doubts after living with mine for a month.

-Charging is annoying - relief to go back to wearing a normal watch at the weekends.
-Haven't found any decent apps, so it's standard and just used for notifications
-Voice control stuff really only works in quiet environments, on any device

it's very handy for quickly checking messages in meetings or dismissing calls etc. BUT I've had several people comment to me that it looks like I'm being rude and checking my watch all the time as if I have to be somewhere else.

The battery life, you can't break the laws of physics. Unless people are willing to wear a thicker watch then battery will be an issue. Fortunately this technology is improving.

As I say, we are at the start of the smartwatch evolution. Whilst they are for checking alerts and the majority of society are not familiar with them then it will appear rude. However, as they become more integrated in to every day life (and this means being used for more than notifications) they will become just another gadget. As I said, I am seeing some pretty interesting stuff on the horizon which will encourage me to commit to wearing a smartwatch.

I'd love to give one a go, but I'm too fond of my regular watches smile.

The Moto 360 looks ace though scratchchin

I'm still waiting for the public release of google glasses! Can't wait for a decent heads-up inside the helmet on the bike hehe
As for the (possible) Apple release, well, it's been 7 years since the iphone and despite making it in different sizes they really haven't done anything significant in that time, so I wouldn't hold my breath for them releasing a "game-changer".
