If you want to use walkie talkies in a car convoy, abroad so maybe cheaper than mobiles, any suggestions?

Look at PMR 446 radios, these are license free but do have a limited range. There are consumer type or more professional type. e.g.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motorola-P14MAB03A1AS-TLKR...

Or you can rent radios (or buy) from many places, I've used Audiolink in Wembley. http://www.audiolink.co.uk/page/Hire/

You need to think about recharging.

Or why not look at CB radios? Loads on eBay.

And check the law in the country where you are going, allowed channels, etc

Ok, so by the time I have bought some of these devices, I might as well buy a local sim card for a mobile phone... CBs seem to be the best choice for range but they aren't cheap and seem to need an external ariel.

You can get hand held CB's with the aerial attached. No need for an external one.

Link to hand held CB nicked from other thread running on this subject

funny, i've just read through that one, what a coincidence that the subject comes up twice!

But at that price, which I suppose is fair for what they do, i'd be able to get to PAYG Spanish sims I bet

Biggest advantage is 2-way radios are generally legal to use while driving, mobile phones are not which restricts usage unless there are passengers in the car.

I was certainly glad to have the radios on a recent road trip when our convoy got separated in the middle of nowhere with no phone signal.

Mine are only cheapo Cobra Micotalks but range is still good for about a mile, easily long enough to shout at someone when they miss a turning or getting near a motorway junction.

I guess thats the level I was after...
I see your point about the legality, which is a crazy double standard I suppose!

Thanks for the input all, I certainly have some pondering to do.

Correct about the legality but Euro Plod wont accept its not illegal and still give you a hard time.

Decent radios have headset sockets and if you get a decent set they will last through camping trips, theme parks and festivals etc etc

I suggest these at circa £80 from your local friendly PH dealer
