Is an ipad a replacement for a laptop?

We got an asus transformer in work to play with just after the missus bought a chrome book. If I'd had the transformer first I'd have talked her into buying one of those instead.

If you work out everything you need a computer for and the iPad ticks all the boxes then yes, why not.

My friend runs an iPad as his only computer and he loves it. His is 4g ready and as he uses iTunes for films and music he has everything available to him at all times. It really is a good setup.

7dayshop are doing a 16GB WiFi iPad with case and car charger for £119 inc. VAT - at that price it's worth getting one anyway even if you go for the new laptop/macbook?

It depends on what you are doing and what you are used to. My children almost exclusively use their iPad to read books, scan the internet, reply to emails, call their friends. They do use a computer to do their homework (presentations and long documents).

Personally, for playing with websites and watching movies the iPad is great. Anything else I use my laptop. To go really 'old school' for downloading, video editing, web creation I use a desktop ...

As I said at the beginning of my post. If it ticks all the boxes then it could replace a laptop for the OP.

People are quite happy to change their phones often as the vast majority never foot the upfront cost due to taking out two year contracts. When the two years is up they 'upgrade' to the latest shiny must have phone for a small upfront outlay.

Tablets are a different market IMO. Splashing out £300/£400+ for a tablet and people are going to keep them until they are of no use, as they would a PC. I'm not surprised that sales are slowing to be honest.

Originally most tablets were bigger and that was seen to be best. Then cheaper smaller devices came onto the market and people bought them as they were cheaper and more convenient.

Now phones are getting bigger with many with over 5" screens.

More people are happy with big screen phones. I've got a Nexus 7 MK2 and I often find I'll use my S5 before that.

I'll jump on to the laptop when I've got more to do.

Back to the original topic, tablets are good, but there is so much that they struggle or can't do. Not all websites work on all devices.

No idea why you are having so much issues with Windows. I don't like Windows 8 with the way it has been set out, but it has been reliable since I've used it on a very average Acer machine.

I got a tablet, some kind of Samsung around Xmas time, due to a cock up I got it for free, I used it for less than a hour before it started collecting dust. I used to use my MacBook just as much as before.

Last month on a whim I got myself an iPad mini, I've not put it down, use it 95% of the time. I wish I had one before.

This sums up my experience, I had a Sony tablet a couple of years ago - other than Netflix when in bed occasionally I never used it, always the laptop. Bought an iPad air, whole different ball game - only turn my laptop on to manage my media collection once every couple of months.

Have 3 tablets at the moment, iPad Air, 1st Gen Nexus 7 and Asus Transformer Infinity.

Out of the 3, the Nexus 7 gets the most use as it's a very handy format. The Transformer has got the best battery life and a keyboard. The iPad is in a drawer somewhere, not being powered on in weeks.
The app integration, calendar app, lack of user accounts, just make it a lot less usable in our household.
