I use Nav Free on my iphone, but the missus has just got a Nokia 1020. I was looking for the equivalent of Nav Free for it where the map is stored on the phone and only uses GPS rather than data. Anyone know of one?

Cheers.

Nokia Here Drive+

download maps locally for each country you go to - when online / 3g it can search out detailed locations via online query and its actually the mutts nutts.

Should be installed by default on the phone

Er ... use the "Here" maps (used to be "Nokia maps"). All the map data is stored locally, and the mapping application is there on your phone already installed.

Its probably the best mobile phone built in sat nav unit out there. I have used mine for road trips from Singapore to Burma and Laos as well as indonesia and australia, both driving and walking in city centers. Easy to find and save locations very clear instructions and it has never once got lost. Also the maps and subsequent updates are all free too!!!

I have been thinking...

Since Nokia developed the android phone (admittedly I don't think they were released in the UK) does that mean there is an android version of Here maps out there?

I am interested in the offline maps as I an amazing talent of finding areas with no signal combined with poorly signposted diversions.

My go-to application is still Co-Pilot, which I purchased while I was in the Android ecosystem and was able to just grab the app for free from the Windows store and signed in with my Co-Pilot credentials. I do prefer it over the Here+ system but if you're someone who hasn't already purchased Co-Pilot you'd be quite right in questioning what it got you over something free like Here+.

I don't use Here+ a lot, but having seen it, I probably wouldn't have purchased anything else if I didn't have Co-Pilot already.

HERE Drive + is great, Ive used it a few times to get myself out of sticky situations with a built in and; supposedly, up to date TomTom.

Drive+ maps are supplied by Navteq, which is still owned by Nokia (not MS).

Navteq maps are used in most OEM car systems and all Garmin units. Tom Tom get their maps from somewhere else and used to have a reputation for lethargy in applying updates to map data.
