The Lumia 930 thread
Discussion
I hardly expect this thread to balloon much!
Picked up a Lumia 930 over the weekend (simfree). I regularly bounce between IOS, and Android, but had never given WP8 a go, so took the plunge. The free accessory bundle helped too.
Lovely phone, and it's nice to use a smartphone in a 'different' way to the ways that I am accustomed to with the two major players.
Would be interested to hear from other Lumia 930 users!

I will update this thread instead from now on.
Very good phone and the freebie's are ace.
So far i've very impressed with the whole package and the OS is so easy to use.
So that everything works seemlessly, i've actully moved away from my Gmail account and created a new Outlook.com account. So i guess i'm starting afresh and moving things over a bit at a time from Gmail. It's like a big digital spring clean.

I'm still enjoying mine. Best phone I ever had, everything works really well.
OneDrive is ace, I use it all the time now.
One irritation in Calendar. If you set an all day event, by default it gets a reminder 4 hours prior. I want to make it so that there are no reminders by default, but there doesn't seem to be an option for that.

Change it from your 'desktop'... ie, log into Hotmail, use the drop down to select 'calendar', then go to options on the top-right.In there you should find an option for your default reminders.... mine is set to 15 mins.
Edit to add - ok, I see that this default only works on entries created through the web rather than on the phone. :|

The cursor seems to work differently now.
Previously, you held your finger down and the cursor would appear just above it so that you could drag it around and position it properly
Now, it appears UNDER your finger, so you can't position it because you can't see where it is, which is feck all use
Is it just me?

Nope, this is one of the crappier issues with WP8.1 - I've had it under the Developers Preview for a few months on my ATIV S and it is probably the main downside, along with teaching wordflow all the words I want to use (stop sniggering in the back!).Previously, you held your finger down and the cursor would appear just above it so that you could drag it around and position it properly

As much as I'm no fanboi, I am typing this on an Ipad and the Apple solution of the magnifying glass is very well excuted.
I also picked up a new Lumia 930 last week to replace my 18 month old 920. First impressions are generally good, the build is great and the OLED screen really does have a much livelier look than the 920's LCD.
I've got the same frustrations with WP8.1 though.
(1) The cursor change from WP7 and WP8 is just plain annoying
(2) The removal of social network notifications from the Me tile. That was one of Windows Phone's best features from the very first version of WP7, having all your FB, twitter and LinkedIn notifications in your Me Tile. Now with 8.1 they've passed that over to the actual apps to handle in the new Action Centre, which is all well and good but once you've dismissed a notification it's gone. To see a notification in full you need to launch the relevant app which can be slow and sometimes will not launch straight into the notification that you're trying to read.
Anyway, those are OS complaints, not directed at the Lumia 930 itself. My only complaint with the 930 is that the battery life isn't as good as the 920, however with the higher resolution screen and faster CPU that's not really a surprise. It's noticeably lighter than my 920 and looks good enough that I don't want to cover it with a case. I wouldn't want it to be any larger though, it's pretty much the maximum size I want to be carrying around.
The inclusion of a USB wireless charging pad in the box is a nice little bonus though, that can just live in my laptop bag allowing me to top-up charge at work anytime. My only mistake was going for the green one. IT'S SOOOOOO BRIGHT, I've already got a Skinomi set for it to cover the back. I may order a new black or white back for it in a few weeks (total cost around £40 to change the back as it need a new NFC module, wireless charging and camera LED to stick to the rear shell). Just remember that this is the same phone as the US Lumia Icon so any accessories for the ICON are 100% compatible with the 930 - good for cases and screen protectors via Amazon or eBay.
I've got the developer preview app installed so should have the GDR1 update next week with Cortana and Folders added to the OS, so looking forward to seeing how that improves the phone further.

Is anyone else finding that the live tile for the Store doesn't work? It's meant to show the number of updates available on the tile, but I have to go into the Store and out again to get it to update.
Have you got the update apps automatically turned on? It is supposed to by pass the numbers and just do it in the dead of night while the pixies are playing with the fairies at the bottom of the garden JontyR said:

Overall I'm still loving this phone. Very happy so far.

I want to upgrade to the 930; big fan of Lumia phones and the OS.
Is the battery life decent? I've heard that it's just okay, not great.
My usage is, per day:Is the battery life decent? I've heard that it's just okay, not great.
- About 20 mins of calls
- Maybe 5 texts
- Push email, maybe 3 emails, plus calendar (outlook.com)
- No music, video or social networking
- Use of finance and news apps
- Occasional use of web and maps
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm 20 months into my contract now (Lumia 920) and looking to upgrade early. I was thinking about a 930, although a few things are putting me off from my 920 that I fear will carry over to the 930. Firstly, my phone gets stupidly hot either when in use or on charge, also the battery life is now very poor (hence the early upgrade). I've turned off everything I don't need (including background apps) and it will drain 50% before lunch time.
Could you tell me if you can still link a gmail account to the phone like with the 920?
I'm swaying more towards an LG G3 at the moment though and reverting back to Android. I'll pop into a shop soon to check them all out in person
