Nokia Lumia Cyan/8.1 update
Discussion
The speed, or lack thereof, has been one of my biggest gripes with the 1020. Add in the deterioration of quality of the shots and a terrible auto mode and I'm struggling to justify buying it in the first place. WP8 has been buggy for me and all the apps I use are leagues behind the iOS and Android versions. I switched from a iPhone 4s to the 1020 and I'm still tied into a contract until September 2015 I believe. Waiting for the iPhone 6 to be released so I can buy one sim free and get rid of this hunk of junk.

It's not just me that's noticed the camera has started to get progressively worse then? Sometimes it's just so slow to start. Press camera button, wait, wait, wait, lose the moment.
The 1020 camera has never been fast. My old 808 with its single core old hat ARM11 can start the camera, take a 38mp photo and be back in the pocket and locked while the 1020 camera application is still starting up or "resuming ...."Doesn't matter which camera app I used on the 1020 - either the stock Nokia Camera, Camera Beta, 1shot, 4HDR, Blink, MS Camera, etc. - all way too slow at startup. Autofocus is also way too slow - which can effectively mean missing the moment even if the camera app is already started.
so 925 or 1020 is the question, you guys saying the issue with the camera is bad on the 1020? worth just going with a 925 instead?>

The 925 is seen as "old hat" now, and we were hoping for a successor to come out but it just hasn't happened.
The 930 is a great bet. Excellent 20MP camera that quality wise is (apparently - according to the Internets!) similar to the 1020's. I don't own either (I have a 1520, which is the same camera as the 930) and I'm more than happy with it.

I only experience speed issues with the camera - startup and shot to shot times. The actual camera app itself is a demonstration in how to design a quality camera interface.Overall the OS has been virtually bug free. Actually, it has been bug free. I've not experienced any issues with the OS in general. The occasional app crash here and there, but thats about it.
I also have an iPhone 4S and the UX on iOS is utter garbage compared to the WP interface. There aren't many apps I have on both as I've pared the 4S down to the minimum. Facebook on iOS is probably the worst interface I've ever had the displeasure of attempting to use.
I'd view going to iOS as a MAJOR step backwards.

I'd agree with all that. My camera never used to be this slow, it's only since updating to 8.1 that it's been getting slower. It's 8seconds from pressing the button to being in the camera app which seems forever if you're trying to capture a moment. Overall the OS has been virtually bug free. Actually, it has been bug free. so is the camera on the 1020 better than the 930?
The 1020 has a genuine xenon flash, which will be an advantage in low light. The pureview oversampling on the 1020 doesn't give the same quality results that were available on the 808 .... and the CPU in the 1020 isn't really fast enough to perform the oversampling anything like as quick as the 808 (which had a dedicated GPU for the task). In lab tests the 1020 will normally be better, in the real world in good lighting there won't be much in them.

cheers. so worth trying them both out then.
contract is up in a few week time, so will have fun seeing which I prefer
The 930 is considerably faster, and bear in mind that the 1020 will be EOL (end of life) at some point this year. Assuming you can get a good deal on the 930, it is probably the better all round device of the two.contract is up in a few week time, so will have fun seeing which I prefer
Well I just got bowled over by Cortana by asking it to remind me to pick up a power cord when I get to work, and it did exactly that once I'd driven the 50 miles (With no sat nav enabled or anything clever). Awesome!
I often think that things like this are a fad but this is really really useful. I have no idea if something like Siri does this though - but nice to see MS catching up on this stuff. Free is also good

Anyone else tried the 'Live lockscreen Beta'?
I've just uninstalled it, it's really really slow and clunky.

Then every time I went to unlock the phone it popped up with "Resuming .....". Apparently some of the live lockscreen beta was still enabled in the "Kids corner". So even though I don't use Kids Corner, I had to enable it, switch off the live lockscreen, then disable kids corner. Irritating.
Only one caveat so far with 8.1 GDR1. Screen sensitivity in IE seems to have changed a little.

The main reason I removed was the "Resuming...." was happening with Live Lock screen installed. I also found no way of leaving the app installed but turning it off and using say Bing for the lock screen instead for a change.
I know it's only a beta, but it's a pretty poor app IMO.
