I've just got an iMac to replace my ageing XP system.

Still getting used to how Apple do things but have managed to find the keystrokes for the # symbol.

Why XP?? MS-DOS 3.1 is where it really is at. No problems with viruses - you can get Gem Desktop, MS Word. Really do not see the need for XP... You do not need any software updates anyway....

Get this and it should work in Windows 8.

This will remove the bloatware installed by Lenovo.
http://pcdecrapifier.com/download

Make the recovery DVD's that it'll nag you to make.

Run Windows Update over and over to get the latest updates installed. Keep doing it until there are none to install.

Microsoft Security Essentials is another. It's free and works.

EDIT
Another one is https://ninite.com/

It'll install all the usual crap, Flash, Java, .NET etc. Keep the program and run it occasionally to update to the latest releases of the original selections.

I've been using Macs since the early 90's. Anything else feels alien and bloody hard work.

Ditto. I like bits of w7, but it feels prehistoric still.

Used an original Mac when they first came out. Testing multi platform software in the mid '90s meant a PC and a Mac on my desk, while a colleague had OS2 and Solaris to play with.

I now have a Mac Classic sitting on a shelf in my study as an ornament.

Each to their own. I worked in print/design, wasn't really a choice back then.

The very first thing you should do (after switching it on and connecting to the net) is install Firefox (or Chrome). Don't use IE, ever.

Already installed within win 8 and 8.1 as "Windows Defender" - One last thing I will recommend is turn off one-drive. This causes my XPS 8500 to "burp" (random slight freeze with "blip" through speakers - so quick you are barely conscious of it) but happens frequently enough to spoil music and video playback.

I use both every day and fail to see why people make so much fuss about the differences.

The browser wars were over a decade ago, dude. Netscape lost. Let it go!

OP, all the main browsers work fine these days, you can use IE. For Adblock on IE, google EasyList TPL. The built-in Firewall and AV are good enough too unless you have a weakness for 'free prawn' and clicking the 'Yes' button when asked.
