decided to give the new Surface Pro 3 a go. The Microsoft Store seems vaguely competitive so thought I would try it. Went through the product selection and the extras (just under £1800), clicked on next - and got an error

"Sorry, there was a problem with your request.
Return to the Microsoft Store home page."

what complete idiots - do they use 5yr olds to build their websites?

I think I will save my money after all.

People may not like Apple but they are ruthlessly efficient at taking your money when you try to give it to them biggrin

Oh my god a website having a temporary problem whatever next biggrin

Seriously - you were going to spend £1800 but now you aren't because their website didn't work when you tried it?

yep - funny that Apple's website never does that, or amazon or .... (I've made 100s of purchases across those two sites - never had a single issue)

I'll still probably buy one but not directly from their website.

I do think you missed the "spirit" of the post, after many years of happy Apple ownership, Microsoft finally come out with a product I think I might like and they screw it up at step one.

In fairness though, Microsoft's websites are riddled with faults, dead links, incorrect re-directs etc.

Let's not pretend that they're not! smile

Hi,

As per above really! you find an issue with the website being down or experiencing an error and you want to drop the whole purchase because of it!?!

Issues and problems occur for many reasons to ANY company, be it Microsoft OR Apple - remember when Apple released that half arsed attempt at some maps ? was that not a situation that suggested a bunch of kids could have done better like you're currently implying about Microsoft?!!

Did you retry your purchase a short while later? how about calling the Microsoft sales team to place your order ?

It's well known that nowadays, everybody wants INSTANT gratification for many aspects of life including thinking that computers and internet shops for all vendors will work 100% all the time, 100% of the time. If there's any hiccup, then posts like this come about where it's simply horrifying there was a glitch and what was wanted didn't happen a few seconds later.

I guess you've gone and bought an Apple Airbook thing instead now?!

Cheers, Dennis!

lol - no I have all the Apple products already, wanted to try the latest Microsoft have to offer.

I just tried the Microsoft website again (with a browser restart) and still get the same error.

Why should I call them - that requires effort on my behalf. I especially do not want to talk to a human being, who will no doubt ask me if I am having a nice day and if I want to go large or have fries with that.

I agree everyone wants INSTANT gratification and most vendors provide a method to cater for this - it is called a website and these days it is most often the channel for initial contact between a customer and any (especially technology) company.

Just occurred to me - maybe the Microsoft website does not work with Safari - haha that would be rather amusing!

On a related matter - does anyone know why the Microsoft Store does not offer express delivery - the only option I could find was free but it is 5-7 business days?

So you're an apple fanboy, looking to score points.

All you did was look a tt, TBH. Apple have 'never' had web services problems. Never had any issues running iOS updates. And Amazon were never susceptible to Heartbleed.

The OP's makes a valid point. It seems daft you have to jump through hoops to buy something.
Having said that MS sites can be awkward and unnecessary complicated to negotiate and use. Remember having real issues with buying Windows 7 some years ago just dead links all round. They could do better
Personally I would have looked around a little to see who stocked it and if price/ delivery could be beaten. And I'm not sure I would spend that much on something that effectively your "stuck with" as the upgrade options are limited. With a lappie you can upgrade drives/ memory etc.
Not sure the OP is scoring points though he seems heavily towards Apple stuff he just seems to want to buy something and is grumbling that the site is a bit naff.

I don't see it that way at all. confused

Just because Apple sell simpleton products at over-inflated prices, that's no reason to excuse their competitors for having crap websites.

I had a similar level of frustration to the OP earlier today. I was having a little browse around at possible next company cars to kill a bit of spare time. OK, I'm not actually due a new company car for a couple of years, but if I had been due one now, the BMW X5 would no be squarely off the shortlist, for the simple reason that I couldn't get the "Build Your BMW" configurator to work on Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer. irked

It's 2014. A presence on the internet isn't exactly cutting edge anymore! If they can't get their website working properly, what else can't they do properly?

my point exactly - plus it is now over two hours and the site still will not take my money!

is that still a glitch?

No it's just a knackered website, I see it all the time from plenty of global players and I don't go buy another product because of it.

It's annoying but it is what it is - just wait and buy it when it's working.

I just selected a nice looking one, MS Office, and a keyboard and clicked through 'Next' too. Quite expensive, aren't they? Win8.1 and IE11 immersive.

£1800 on a tablet! I must have missed something because since when did tablets get so incredibly expensive?!

Agree with the sentiment of the OP though. If MS can't get it right then not much hope for the rest of us.

Hi,

I've just read that and I'm immediately thinking;

&

Taking as if you are meaning it a bit light heartedly, it's not the end of the world, very often in the IT industry, things can and do go wrong and websites do stop responding or working occasionally. Yes, if it's extremely important stuff like access to your online banking or your mobile phone stops working, people with differing requirements will have various levels of being upset about it. However, this is a 'shop' - you don't have the product or anything as yet so it's not going to hurt you to wait till the site works, or heaven forbid, means you have to actually 'do' an action like speak into a phone! In case you forgot, Microsoft won't ask you if you want to supersize it or want fries with it - your mind is obviously getting confused with McDonalds - are you also going to have a go at them because you have to 'actually' get up to go to them ?!

The Surface Pro 3 is getting good reviews for what it is, and it's mainly businesses that order them and they don't need it within 45 minutes like you do. So 'express delivery' I'd imagine doesn't have much in the way of requests on microsofts websites. I think if you relax for a few and actually 'heaven forbid' use you mind a bit more, you'd also be able to reason out that for yourself as well !

Similarly though, when there was recent outages of mobile phone networks and some years back when I was working in my IT career, the online banking of one of the big banks went offline, I could see why there were perhaps thousands of people aggravated due to it. I just so happened to working at a consultancy at the time tasked with going to the big corporates of the world and identifying and reducing these sorts of risks. The sheer multitude of hardware, software processes and backup systems needed to keep such a service running was astonishing. It only takes some small code failure or inoperability to potentially cause an issue like you experienced and has happened to ALL major companies in the world that you'd care to mention. However, as you and many millions of people don't see this kind of stuff, the easy thing to do is complain about it (oh how ever so British!) and compare those who do look after such systems as 5 year old kids.. on a forum.. on the internet... without getting up as well wink

To the person thinking a tablet couldn't cost this much, this Surface Pro 3 is a more higher end and business level use device aimed at a certain sector of the market. Although it can do the stuff of 'home/consumer' type users, it's also much more capable than that smile

Cheers, Dennis!

many thanks for your overly condescending post.

I love the fact you have the cry-baby image on your photo-bucket account, suggests you are prone to over-usage.

I hope you have a happy life.

But the fact remains - one of the highest budget IT companies in the world has failed.

I tried to spend nearly £2K with them - they could not be bothered to make their website work for someone on the latest OSX and latest Safari. And just to add, I signed in with an account I use for my MSDN subscription.

Are you trying to suggest their website is aimed at corporate buyers?

FFS it accepts paypal!

Dream on.

As an IT professional myself - I hope I never have to deal with you personally. If any website I am responsible for is full of errors - which you state is ok then I will quit.

It is exactly your sort of sloppy "oh it is going to happen" attitude which gives the IT industry a bad name.

The software solutions most of us provide work as described.

My customers would not be happy with that sort of lax attitude, but hey I guess you got to live but perhaps banking is more appropriate for you - where the standards are so much lower.....

In any case, the Microsoft store is still not working, and I still cannot order express.

Let me check the competitor websites one more time.....
