Please can you help. I have combined the various digital photo files we have on one computer and would like to rename the files so they are in a common format based on the date they are taken.

So some files might say IMG1234.jpg, some may say 2014_08_29_12345678.jpg etc, I would like them to be renamed based on the date and time they were taken, much like the second example.

Is there a program that I can buy that does this please?

Going one step further, is there a utility that could take all the files created on a particular day, put them in a folder and give that folder the appropriate date?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if it's 100% what you want but Bulk Rename Utility is a bloody brilliant piece of freebie software that does a heaps of different things. I use it nearly everyday at work and I'd say over the years it's saves me literally thousands of hours if I had to do things manually.
I work in document digitisation and deal with 10's of millions of images smile

Have a look at Irfanview
Http://www.irfanview.com
- It's an essential utility for any PC user, and it does have many renaming options.

There's also advance renamer: http://www.advancedrenamer.com/ which I use to generate random file names for random slideshow. That's VERY powerful.

I've used this on Ubuntu with great success:

Someone forgot to set the camera date/time so all the exif data was wrong, so I time shifted the exif data and then renamed the files from the new exif data in the form of multiple action batch files.
