I have a 2008 Macbook 13" (White body) which needs a new battery.

Given the age I don't want to drop 90 into an Apple one - but its annoying having a mains-only machine these days.

Anyone got a non-official one thats been ok? I'm not after 6 hours of charge but something that reliably gives over 2.

I would have thought that, if this is the only problem you have had, then £90 on a battery for a laptop thats nearly 6 years old isn't a bad.

I think there are plenty of pattern batteries on ebay, however, i wouldn't like to say how reliable or safe they are.

I gambled on a £15 pattern battery from ebay for a nearly 2008 Macbook. The machine was a freebie ("spares/repairs") and just wouldn't charge.

Holds a >2 hour charge, doesn't throw any errors and looks identical to the Apple battery sans-branding on the underside. Wouldn't surprise me if it was just a re-manufactured Apple one.
