My work want me to learn and pass the exam for this but do not want to put me on a course for it. As such I have CBT Nuggets available to me, and I can install Windows 2012 on my computer at home (HP Microserver with VMWare).

Has anyone here sat the exam for 70-410? I am looking for tips to help me pass with knowledge, rather than just pass reading a bit of paper, so any advice is greatly appreciated!

I used nuggets, the MCSA book and the administering 2012 book.

IIRC questions about subnets ie how many pcs on this subnet, fsrm, dns, quite a bit of hyper-v and printer pooling etc.

Thanks - I might have to set up a Hyper V server as well as VMWare then, as VMWare is what I am currently using.

Sounds like my workplace. They want me to obtain a VCP5 qualification "to look good for clients" but don't want to pay the 3k fee, or take me out of the business for a week for the intensive course.

And the only way you can get the VCP5 is to do the official course. I bet they won't up your pay either!

My opinion is that they appear to be pretty worthless unless applying for new jobs.
I say worthless as they are so easy to cheat.

1 method of obtaining the qualification:
- watch the CBT nuggets - so you have at least some knowledge of it!

- visit http://www.examcollection.com/
---obtain a copy of VCE exam simulator. ($15.99 / month)
---download a few VCE files and work through them until you memorise every question!

- Sit the exam. Make sure you apply for any free resit offers in case you don't pass first time.

Correct way.

1) Get some M$ self study books (come with the Disks you need).
2) Load up the OS in your lab at home and do the exercises.
3) Get a strong knowledge on the key exam areas.

Do some test exams (available via M$)

Do exam, pass, rinse and repeat till you get required cert.

The wrong way (IMHO)
[rant]
Get the vce simulator, cram just the exam, get the pass with zero clue on how to deliver a viable solution using the product.

Paper <insert certification> make me sad

It's unfortunate that the industry craves the coin generated by exams etc.

VMware seem to have a more common sense approach and the VMware certs still have value, same with Cisco.

Agreed, nothing like getting a paper cert then being alone with no phone lines and internet.

Get it the right way and you don't devalue the cert or make yourself look a prat when everyone looks to you to fix stuff.

^This^

I've lost count of the amount of times I've gone to a site to "clean up" behind a paper cert.

Best one was at Lloyds, (going back a few years) you could argue the interview wasn't vigorous enough or the client hadn't done enough due diligence regarding a candidates past, stuff happens.

Guy comes in with shiny MCSE, given a relatively simple task, (server data migration, shares, perms etc). Fouls it up royally, escorted off site and returns back to bar work.....

A lot of companies do this. I am going on a SCOM course next week paid for by the company. I believe they are putting a 6 month clause on it.

Did you have to sit a course as well before feeling ready to take the exam(s)?

Just reading for this, I've got a copy of the M$ book and made it through the first chapter.

Was planning on doing via a cloud lab, Azure or Vaasnet.
