Guys,
The MIL has decided she wants a tablet.
She initially wanted an iPad but managed to pursuade her to go Android mainly to keep cost down.

She mainly wants it for skype & FB when she's on holiday or staying with friends etc.
Also mentioned using it as an ereader.

I have a Nexus 7 which I was thinking of getter her too.
Anyone have an Asus Memopad?
Am i right in saying it uses a pretty standard version of Android.

Subscribed as I was about to post exactly the same question - can't help but think any Android tablet will do the job and I can't quite see the point in spending £300 on an iPad for online banking and web browsing.

I bought a new 2nd Gen 32gb Nexus 7 last month direct from o2 for £149, price still on the main page here - http://www.o2.co.uk/tablets

But they have put the price back up to £189 - https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/tablets/google/nexus-7-4...

Still a good price, Android L coming very soon.

Nexus 7 specs - http://www.gsmarena.com/asus_google_nexus_7_(2013)...

I'm using a Memopad to type this, it only has a very light skin and is very similar to a first gen Nexus 7 (which it is a replacement for)

It does have a smear magnet screen and feels more plastic-y.
It is still on Android 4.2.2.
Would I buy another..... Yes, I use it for a couple of hours a day and it has given me no problems, unlike my Nexus 7

Got my mum a normal Galaxy Tab a little while ago and she struggled with the keyboard and some things with a finger. Got a cheap little stylus and its made a massive difference to her using the tablet, so having a proper integrated stylus might be a good thing.

Not for Skype - at least not Skype with video. The front camera on the Hudl is almost unusable in anything other than perfect lighting.

Nexus 7 - even the 2012 model - is leagues ahead of the Hudl for skype video calling.

If MIL eyesight is starting to go shat, I'd be looking at 10"+ tab with the sharpest resolution possible.

What age bracket is you MIL and how technically capable is she?

My wife (who is a MIL x 3) has an iPad and had no difficulty connecting to various wifi hotspots in various countries. I don't know how simple that is using android.

fairly simple ,unless the wifi system has a complex sign in process or like many 'open' wifi systems it still requires a sign-in or sign-up to the T+Cs via a webpage ...

the stylus thing is a good tip , although it;s far less of na issue on tablets than on phones.
