It's my son's 6th Birthday in a few weeks. We want to buy him a tablet as he always wants my ipad4 whenever i need it.

What do you recommend around £250? I'm swaying away from an Ipad Mini Retina as i'm fed up with iTunes. My son likes a few movies on it for journey's etc and doing it with Handbrake/iTunes is a pain. I'm thinking about the new Galaxy Tab S 8.4. I now its customisable and putting movies on it is not a problem. It also has expandable SD slot so no worries there.

Are there any alternatives you would recommend? Also the cheapest way to get the Tab S?

Nexus 7? Think they are down to around £150 now.

I've just put an order on for a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 for £224, most tend to be around the £280+ mark. I appreciate the Hudls are good but i want something i can use for work occasionally too.

He reads two books a night and has been in two theatre productions. This is his reward for being the best he can be academically.

My son (also 6) reads plenty, likes his toy cars, loves getting out on his bike or scooter and is top of his class in maths ... hence no problems with him having a tablet. In his case its a Hudl.

Although if anyone is considering a Hudl for their kid, do NOT buy the rubberised case. It causes the device to overheat (to the point of failure).

One of these. It's the only sort of tablet I had when I was 6.

And your point is? With the greatest respect, there weren't many other tablets to choose from I imagine.

IPad mini with the Griffin heavy duty case is what we use.

You can download music / films from Amazon instead of itunes smile

Our two year old son uses an iPad mini (lots of kids apps) for an hour or two a day and loves it, although he seems addicted to Disney collector on YouTube frown

Alternatives could be the Kindle Fire (they're bringing a new pocket version out next month) or Samsung Galaxy? Heard good things about the Nexus too. Guess it depends on what apps, what stores etc you want to use smile

He doesn't want a tablet, he wants to be like you. Put down your electronics when you're around your kids and they won't want to grab them.

Nah that's rubbish.

Get him a 128GB iPad air for when he's chilling at home and a 32gb iPad mini for when he's mixing it with his homies at school He can rehearse his lines for the theatre on it.

I'd consider a Mac pro with a 32 inch apple display for content creation. Get him into the apple ecosystem early I say.

Or get him some lego, pencils and crayons, a football and a new bike?
