Extending WiFi
Discussion
Hi All, I am trying to extend my WiFi as the thick walls in our house pretty much kill the signal (2.4 and 5 GHz) dead. Its fine on the ground floor, but by the time I am on the landing, signal is fair. By the time I get to a room its completely gone.
In one of the rooms I have a wired ethernet cable which feeds through the floor boards and comes out at the router downstairs. So I want to use this ethernet connection to provide a second wireless access point upstairs.
I am looking online and there seems to be loads of WiFi extenders which are repeaters (i.e. picking up the original wifi network and re-broadcasting). This is no good because of how weak the signal gets in such a short space. I need a device that will take that ethernet, work with my router and provide WiFi.
is this any good for instance? http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/tp-link-tl-wr710n-n150-w...
or this? http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing-accessories...

I went with this to resolve the same sort of problem in my parent's place..

Granted it's not a wired deal, but it works perfectly.. It supports network cloning, so there's no need to bounce between networks..

Has the OP duplicated his network ?
That was indeed what I was trying to do! Tried to get an old Plusnet router to work upstairs but its trying to phone home to plus net and as it can't it won't give access to any of the configuration screens. So when I clicked back to get here, I must have re-submitted the thread.ash73 said:

I use one of these and it's perfect. Don't be fooled by the appearance it's not a homeplug jobbie, it connects to an ethernet cable and just plugs straight into the mains.Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
