Hello.

Does anyone know of a SatNav app that allows you to download the map so it can be used without a data connection?

I am travelling to Germany this weekend and although I think I know the route, it would be nice to explore some of the roads when I'm there.

Cheers
Dan

Navfree does, UK Europe all can be downloaded - got it on my Samsung tablet.

Can give the odd dodgy direction, but it's basically free so helps get me going in the right direction without needing a phone signal.

I've used CoPilot a lot to navigate around the USA and it has never let me down.

I'm not sure of the price now, but it initially cost £23 and the US map was £6

Well what device do you want to run the app to run on?

The free Nokia HERE Drive+ Sat Nav app has free downloadable maps for just about anywhere in the world but you need a Windows phone to run it.

Navfree is just great. Works flawlessly here, in Europe, and in the USA in my experience.

It's not technically free if you don't want banner adverts though - £1.50 to turn them off which is peanuts.

There is an android beta available now. It is supposedly going to be for Samsung phones initially, but it seems to work OK on my nexus 5:

Another vote for NavFree. Used it as a backup all over Europe for the past few years.

Nokia Here may be available on iPhone now - certainly won't be Windows-only for too much longer as Here is one of the parts of Nokia that wasn't sold to Microsoft.

If your are looking to pay for something (rather than a free option) then I would also recommend TomTom for iPhone.

£35 for Western Europe, no need for a data connection.

I've done A LOT of research on this. I was an avid TomTom user and my 930T model was brilliant.

However, I like to keep my car "clean" so I wanted to switch to my iPhone for GPS satnav and read up a lot on the subject.

TomTom
Brilliant app and lifetime free maps. If I had a 64GB iPhone I'd take this as you have to download all the European map data to make the app work. That's 1.3GB of precious space on your phone taken up by a map you will only use for a tiny portion.

Traffic and cameras cost extra (as do the dedicated units), but the interface is brilliant and map corrections are amazing.

Co-pilot
I bought the US version for use while I was driving in the states. The interface is terrible however it has all the POI's and the mapping is very accurate. You can also download just the area you want and thus save space. For example, I only downloaded Nevada and surrounding states while I was in Vegas. This mean a 380MB download as opposed to GB's of maps I'll never use taking up space on my iPhone.

Sygic
This is the app I have and originally it was brilliant. I paid £35 for lifetime EU maps and you can download each country individually.

However, Sygic decided to update the app to make it more "pretty" and in turn removed and damaged a lot of the existing functionality.

- Traffic works using TomTom traffic but it doesn't re-route you when there's a jam. (TomTom does).
- Cameras work great. The latest update is very accurate (in Spain where I live).
- Routing is also great although it can take you through a maze of streets sometimes. Also be sure to turn off unpaved roads otherwise you (like myself), can find yourself on a dirt track in the middle of nowhere although I did get to my destination!
- Data logging is great and keeps an eye on your journeys including speed, pace, altitude, etc by logging all GPS data. It also has G force logging too which is interesting.

Short of the long is if you have the space, choose TomTom. If I upgrade my iPhone to a 64GB version some day, I will buy this.

If you lack space and want an intuitive app, I'd go for Sygic. While they messed up with the initial new app launch, they do provide regular updates and are getting better all the time.

I use Sygic on Android, the new update looks OK
Never had a problem with it not re-routing around traffic but if does do odd things with traffic sometimes

Used co-pilot on the iPhone and on Android, brilliant.
As said, the interface isn't the best but the mapping and navigation, as well as the options are top notch.

Also, when abroad, got a ton of POI including restaurants, hotels and petrol stations very handy and no need for mobile data.
