Free MAC Update Yosemite
Discussion
I guess I haven't used it long enough to comment on whether one should upgrade, can only give my immediate thoughts - its great lol. From my experience with updating my iPhone and having a useless phone for my everyday use, you might want to air on the side of caution if your inclined that way.
First issue: Theres no button on safari for full screen or at least I can't find it, had to use the key combination to achieve it.

Tried to install this, left it running overnight. Screensaver came on and wouldn't go off.
I can now log into the computer but as it's about to boot to the main screen it just goes black and displays the spinning ball.
Currently attempting a fresh install of the whole system.
Pain in the arse!

It looks and feels much more modern - that flat iOS8 design translates well to a laptop.
Maildrop is already proving useful - if an attachment is too big for Gmail or whatever mail tool you use, its simply a transparent upload to the cloud and the recipient gets a link to download.
Seamless and zero setup.
It's evolutionary, but no major downsides so far.

Does the green button not do it? It's now supposed to, but not tried, I will be updating mine when I get home.Read through the Ars review of it this morning and all seems good to me (full screen button moving is mentioned in it).

Anyone know if it's possible to download this to save on a USB stick or something? The download is 5.16GB and my internet is crap at home.
Fairly easy:http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/10/how-to-make-y...
Thanks!
Installed seamlessly on my iMac (unlike Mavericks). Looks nice enough, haven't really scratched the surface of it all yet.
It still grates that Apple swallowed up AuthenTec and killed support for my fingerprint reader in Mavericks, so I'm expecting something else to be inexplicably broken.

I've been beta testing it on my iMac and, despite a few hiccups (as you'd expect with betas), have liked it a lot. I installed the release version last night on my mid-2011 iMac and late 2009 MacBook Pro. No issues.
Same here. Last beta runs very smoothly on a 2008 imac and I'm downloading the full update in the background at the moment. Considering moving the laptop to Yosemite too as I can see some advantages in everything running the same system. I'd originally played with the beta before planning to do a full wipe of the disk and reinstalling from the ground up expecting it to kill an older machine, (see iOS 8 issues on older phones), but its actually running very well so far. Installed without a single issue on 2008 24" iMac, downloaded for about 10 min and the installation took another 20 min. So far the only big and annoying (for me) difference is the BRIGHT RED Itunes icon and of course the new iTunes interface, why Apple keep changing it with every new update???
Yahoo messenger not supported, Aperture not supported... (obviously will need new versions)
On a positive side, my screen looks like full HD now...I don't know what it is exactly but I was watching the new episode (04) of the Blacklist before the installation and when I started it again WOW, much more sharp and defined colours and the clarity is much, much better.
As I've mentioned I don't know what it is but it's MUCH better, like having a new screen
For a 2008 machine is simply WOW.
I will give more updates in a few days when I had the chance to play around with all my apps etc.

I am unsure whether to install or not. As it stands my current install of Mac OS really dates right back to when they first introduced time machine. Even though I have bought new machines since then, I have loaded up from time machine so I can carry on where I left off. When I got my current Mac I think they were on Snow-Leopard, maybe the one after and I have upgraded every year. So thats a lot of OS's patched over the top of each other. I am just worried its going to be a bit messed up. There are already odd things about the machine to do with sleeping/hibernating.
I may just wait until my PhD is done and I don't have to rely on the computer anymore. Then save all the things I want, make a list of all the programs I want to keep then start a fresh. I will do this at the same time as swapping out the CD drive for one of those caddys to hold an SSD. SSD to boot from and have some programs installed. Original 1 TB HDD to just hold info (movies, photos etc).
That upgrade should extend its life a bit further. Cheaper than buying a new computer!
