I need to get a laptop for my daughter - budget range £300-£400 max.
Will need a DVD drive and Windows os.

Any recommendations?
Been looking at Acer - are they any good?

Thanks.

Thanks.

That one ok for a bit of gaming too? (As in The Sims, Minecraft etc - nothing hardcore ...)

Would be okay, but not amazing, may lag a big.

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/lap...

AMd has a system (IIRC) that integrates the system RAM and the graphic ram and the AMD chip can take system RAM and make it GPU Ram (will only take up to 2gb) and uses it as if a seperate graphics card. I use a similar (slightly older) setup in mine and can run Grid 2, GTA, Arma the lot, so it does work.

Good price too.

The Lenovo has a 1080p screen, I would never touch a HP again, utter garbage.

Minecraft doesn't really tax on graphics.

Sims should be ok, but may need lower settings.

Just because you may have had a bad experience doesn't mean the OP will.
My HP's have lasted for years, yet a high end Toshiba I bought disintegrated.

Either way, an AMD based system would be better for the OP.

HP: 12 Brand new Elitebooks, top end (£1500 laptops), 3 DOA needing new motherboards, 3 additional dead motherboards within 3 months, 2 dead HDD's and a dead screen.

Hardly a one off.

What's your justification for the AMD being 'better for the OP'?

Processor speed is comparable, but the GPU in the AMD is much slower, lack of 1080p and the fact that the Lenovo is cheaper doesn't really make your argument.

Amd A8 chipset is comparable to an i5, and when using graphical stuff (games/PS etc) the GPU will take system memory so it runs things like the Sims and minecraft and such easily without needing to turn it down. So would be more powerful and better for anything graphical for the OP.

Personally, the 1080p screen isn't massively important on a 15' screen.

1. It's comparable to an i3, there is virtually nothing between the processors : http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2012...

2. GPU on the A8 uses system memory, but it also uses the same memory bus as the CPU which actually slows it down, the one in the A8-6410 in the link you provided is slower than the GT820m in the Lenovo.

3. I would definitely disagree on the screen front, high res is very important. You have more screen real estate; the windows elements don't take as much room on the screen freeing up space for elements you are actually using rather than elements that are needed, but not all the time.

Have you actually used a high res 15" screen for a sustained period of time??

Would I be correct in thinking the HP has an external drive?

Ah yes, I was looking at a review of a slightly different HP model.

My mistake.
