The type in your pic look pretty much the same as the Bose QC20s. Noise cancellation is on a par with the bigger QC15s and they can be charged via USB. I wear them in lots of different places now.

I've got these (QC20i), and before I bought them I was apprehensive about them because I too do not like "down the ear canal" headphones. To be honest though the silicone is so soft that you don't really notice it, and it does not go down your ear canal as much as just plug it - if that makes sense. I've had them in for hours and never felt any discomfort from them, they pretty much feel like my Apple headphones.

They worked brilliantly on a plane journey to America, the battery lasts a long time. It doesn't completely block out external noise (I've never tried the over ear 'phones to compare), it's quite peculiar how it works in that if you leave the noise cancelling on without any music actually playing you might think they're not working, but as soon as you play something through them the background sounds virtually disappear.

I use them in the office at work when I need to get my head down.

Not cheap, but they are quite revelatory. You can have music as loud as you want and no one nearby will hear a thing.

Bose have just released a new version of the over ear headphones, so there might be a newer version of the in-ear ones coming shortly too.
