Are they any good? Do they work on a plane?

I don't like the ones which go inside the ear canal. Do they do any which are the style of the iphone ones where they don't actually go right inside or do they have to right inside to block all the noise?

Thanks all

I've got a pair of Bose noise cancelling over ear jobbies, they do work and are excellent!

I bought some cheap ones from Amazon and amazingly they worked quite well. These ones did go inside the ear and when switched on presumably send a cancelling signal.

Thanks, but I can't be doing with the bulkiness of the over ear ones, and I really can't stand the 'in ear' ones. Looks like I'm trying to find something which doesn't exist frown

ETA - But they are cheap! Might get some to try at that price.....I just have never got on with the down the ear canal ones!

Bose QuietComfort 3 sit on the ear.

I prefer the 2 which enclose the ear

Both work well in planes

I've got the QC15s and QC20s and tried them both side by side on a flight last month. Both were equally as good at noise cancelling so I'll be sticking with the 20s from now on as I find them easier to sleep with.

Cheers again guys, but I'm getting confused. On ear, in ear, over ear, around ear.

For clarity, I don't want this type

or this type

But I want this type (if they exist?)

Not noise cancelling, but a great fit and do the job better than some so called 'noise cancelling' headphones.

The type in your pic look pretty much the same as the Bose QC20s. Noise cancellation is on a par with the bigger QC15s and they can be charged via USB. I wear them in lots of different places now.

Sorry guys, I know you're trying to help, but aren't these all 'down the canal' types which I hate, or am I missing something?

The iphone type ones just fit into the ear without actually poking down the ear hole.

If they don't exist, is there something which can make my existing earphones into noise cancelling?

Yes, try the good ones. You will be surprised. You need these better shapes for a better fit and thus cancelling noise.

I suspect they don't make them and it's because they'll be ineffective. Have a look at Sennheiser PXC 250. If you don't like on ear types, then I'm out of suggestions.

I'm in the same boat as you OP in that I don't like the ones that go right into or over the ear but I do want some peace on the plane/train. I tried some of these QC20is and they are great - very comfortable and they sort of "float" in the ear - very difficult to describe but they are not uncomfortable like the normal in-ear ones at all.

Noise cancelling is very good indeed and they sound good too - I've ordered some and they'll be here in the next few days. I'll report back. Not cheap though...

Yikees.......£260 on earphones! That's half the cost of the iphone I'll be using them with! I'm surprised there isn't an app to do it lol

See if you can try on a set of the Bose in ear ones, I also really don't get on with ones that go into your ear canal but found the Bose ones much more comfortable, they are made out of a very soft silicone.

What you are looking for basically doesn't exist though, for noise cancelling to work there has to be at least a bit of a seal between your ear and the headphone which the standard earphones don't have.

Indeed. They are rarely discounted but I've seen them on ebay for around £200 - couldn't say whether they are genuine or not though.

For me the investment was probably worthwhile versus the otherwise inevitable machete-wielding murderous rampage I would have shortly had to embark upon to retain my sanity while commuting. shootphone <<<as close as I can get to the tragic demise of "shouty phone train man/woman" in pictorial form hehe

There are very few active noise cancelling in ear head phones, best thing is to get decent noise isolation.

Best ive had were mid range sennheiser they lasted 2 years and were used for everything from my commute (flew London to Edinburgh each week) and running in the cold and wet in Edinburgh.

My latest set of Bowes and Wilkins are great but so fragile!

For what they cost (£120 - £ 150) they are all I need . If all I wanted them for was flying, over ear would be better but I'd look like a plank in the office or anywhere other than on a plane .

il second about bose not being that comfortable. I have a pair not sure of model but they look same as above. About £115 online. Not noice cancelling though. Sound is ok but not worth the money.

Seriously. Jaybirds. Sound good and are wireless. Great fit and sweat proof.
