Should I update my iphone 4S to iOS 8.1?
Discussion
I believe the answer is a resounding no unless you want to halve the current performance.

I updated my 16GB iPhone 4S to 8.1.
Everything runs a little slower now, most things (opening apps, photos etc.) is now less 'snappy'.
It's not crippled the phone like iOS8 was supposed to though.
I haven't really found any feature in iOS8.1 that I need.
Being able to receive SMS (Not just iMessage) on my MacBook Pro is neat though.
Unless there's a specific feature you want, or (For some unknown reason) you HAVE to have the latest software (like me!), then I probably wouldn't bother.
If you do update - do it via iTunes on your Mac. This means you won't have to delete stuff to find space on the iPhone.

No, no and again no!
I did my 4S to iOS8, that was a big error. 8.1 has improved it but it's bit like being stabbed with a 3 inch knife instead of a 6 inch one!
I also made the mistake of updating a couple of iPad 2's. That was a bad thing unless I wanted to use them as oversized paperweights, which I didn't. 8.1 has made the iPad almost useable again from previously being completely unusable. I now get 30 mins or so of web browsing before it crashes to death, contemplating a Hudl 2 because it's hard to see how it can be worse.
Apple should have just not included these older devices on the list for upgrades. I used to complain that my older Android devices wouldn't update, now I think that's probably a good thing.

I've just 'upgraded' from a 3GS to a 4S. Previous owner already had 8.02 on it and I did the upgrade to 8.1 as soon as I got the phone. All appears fine to me, although I have no experience of iOS7. My phone is quick and has not crashed yet, does everything I expected and more, the ability to use SMS on my Macs is very useful for me.

It's a bit of a mixed bag, apple's approach isn't that bad, they should just "enforce" it less, or make it easier to rollbackThen again, they keep their gear on sale a lot longer (4S was sold until a month ago, wasn't it?), which means they "force" themselves to deliver updates for these devices.
I've yet to own an Android device that got WORSE with new updates, while my iOS gear is getting consistently worse every subsequent update.
If it aint broke, don't fix it, we still got an old ipad on iOS6. Biggest downside is that a lof of apps can't be installed .
