Hi all. I've got a strict £500 budget to buy a quadcopter for the FIL and I remember they've been discussed on here a fair bit. The £500 doesn't need to include a camera as he has a gopro 3 but does need to include everything else.

GPS would be nice but not necessary but it needs to have some sort of FPV screen (rather than goggles) and obviously wiring for his gopro.

Is £500 a do'able budget for something like this? Does anyone know of a uk supplier who can source this sort of thing?

Thanks all.

To be honest a phantom is your best bet.Give Boro a shout on here, but take note!!!!

There is a brand new model Phantom 2 just released with gimbal for the camera. you will know it's the new model as there is a rechargeable battery now fitted in the transmitter and it has four green lights next to the power button on the transmitter. There are now three versions of the Phantom 2 out there, so do your homework before buying.

I would recommend this but it's out of your budget (£650) and won't include screen and video transmitter.

The new model has better motors, props, compass and user friendly transmitter that can now be expanded for their Lightbridge setup.

Have a look on ebay some might be off loading their older models.

Sounds like that's the one to have but the £500 is pretty rigid as I think he's got some money from work to buy it.

Is the phantom 1 still being sold new?

Seen one in Maplins the other day but fitting a gimbal is a hassle.

I'd go for an early Phantom 2 and h2-3d. This what I have and I'm sure there might be some discounts around or how about an early Phantom vision with the camera built in? All you do then is add a smartphone for the screen.

Cheers guys. Thanks for the info. The parrot ar drone looks a lot cheaper but surely it doesn't have the distance if you're controlling it from an iPhone??

Also budget for some 3rd party insurance, especially if you don't have much experience in flying this sort of thing. www.bmfa.org is worth a look. P

This watch the latest gadget show and you'll see there is only one hobbyist drone to get.
