Transfer 100GB to Macbook Air

How? What's the best way?

I've got a 100GB iPhoto library that needs to move across from my old Macbook Pro to my new Macbook Air.

I have a Western Digital My Cloud NAS device but it's taking forever to move over from the MBP using a wireless connection (Virgin router).

I can't hardwire it to the NAS drive using ethernet because MBA doesn't have a port.

Suppose this means a trip to the Apple Store (which never results in me only buying what I intended to buy)

By the time you've been the shops it'll have transferred. Start it off and forget about it till later

Buy a 1tb hdd and use it as an offsite backup of your photos once the transfer is done.

£45 for a 1tb external 2.5"

I have a 2TB NAS drive but it's saying 51 days remaining...

(Which is longer than it takes me to go to the shops).

Yeah but your doing that across a network. Plug the usb HDD into the nas if you can and copy it locally then plug into the mba.

USB3 external hard disk. Most will be able to write at about 150MB/s

You want to get something with USB 3.0, like WD My Passport. Ive got MBA and one of these external hard drives, they are very fast.

After the copy, the are a really useful way to carry data with you or keep key documents backed up offsite

£50 to transfer some photos??

I have a 32gb stick on my keys which is more than enough.

You can use a utility like iPackr to archive the pictures up into split set of files, say 30gb each, then copy them across, once you've finished use iPackr on the new machine to expand them back out.

i've found that doing an ftp transfer is much quicker than using finder to copy files to and from a NAS. a 100GB over wifi should NOT take 51 days. A few hours or overnight at the most.

Stop the copy, Download transmission ftp software (free) and try again.
