Recommend me a tab for my daughter
Discussion
We got here a very cheap tab last year and she liked it but it was slow and clunky.
This year she has asked for a better, bigger one and her school is looking at offering a BYOD scheme for next year. So it make sense.
So, she likes the idea of an ipad mini, but we are a bit of an apple family, however, being apple it is harder to protect and lock down. Was in Currys today and the Samsung Galaxy 7 or 8 looks really nice an has the double bonus of being an good Android device and also has a micro sd slot for easy expansion and moving documents between tab / house pc / school.
SO what am I missing, anyother devices to consider? budget is £200.00

Hudl 2?
Has a dedicated lock down facility for kids, which apparently is OK.
We bought one but returned it, as it it's not supported by flash player anymore.Has a dedicated lock down facility for kids, which apparently is OK.
One workaround - install Firefox. Then it handles flash. Kinda silly reason to return the device really .... samr problem also afflicts the iPad.
As for the surface suggestions, nice idea, but not great for a kid.
My sons like my Windows tablet (Acer W4), it has a great interface (W8.1 on a tablet is way more usable than Android or iOS - as long as you use chrome), but there just isn't a decent selection of apps available for kids on the platform. At the end of the day, the range of games the kids can get on an Android tablet are hard to beat for the price.
And I would suggest a Hudl 2 unless you have some very specific requirements. It appears to have a better screen than the N7, definitely better speakers and it is a fair bit cheaper.
The Nokia N1 when it comes out looks to be one hell of a good deal..... on paper

I'd recommend the Surface 2 but unfortunately it's difficult to get in the budget required. The first gen Surface is sloooooooooow.
mines alright, its quite happy playing a video in one window while I do spreadsheets or browsing in another. Most tabs can't even multitask.Edited by sparkyhx on Saturday 22 November 20:34
I gave my old ipad2 to my son when I bought a new one, set him up his own child Apple ID, and once I had set all the parental controls I found I could lock it down really well.
I have the choice of him being able to look at the App Store or not even be able to see it at all, and have web controls which mean I can set up a whitelist, or just have him request my code every time he comes across a site which is "adult".
When he comes across a website that is considered "adult" it asks for my restrictions password to allow that site. Once it is allowed once, it stays allowed, but I can just go in and delete it from the allowed list). Their definition of adult is broad, and includes the playstation store, the local newspaper, and Pistonheads!
I've granted him access to search the AppStore, but if he wants to buy anything, he requests it and an authorisation request pops up on my device through family sharing, and I either authorise or deny requests.
All in all, I was pretty impressed with the level of customisable control I had over it - is there something about the apple's settings you weren't comfortable with? If so, please share as I may have missed something obvious!
