Im looking to replace my ageing netbook for a tablet.
Needs to have similar functionality, mainly surfing and usb connection to a portable drive and camera. I need to be able to copy files to and from the tablet via file manager. Most tablets dont seem to offer this function or i missed something?
Budget of around 250 pounds, any tips?
Thanks!

Samsung tablets do most of that, it doesn't have enough power to run an external hard drive though.

Depending on budget though and how much Apps mean to you have you looked at Windows surface tablets? I'm seriously considering having an accident with my ipad! Fed up with Apple, very impressed with the Surface Pro!

As long as the external HDD has its own power all you will need would be an OTG cable and media app that can read it like this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com....

Checking OTG (on the go) capability of the tablet first as I have read not all of them support it.
