I'm thinking more along lines of iPad mini or a hybrid netbook/tab. However she used to have an hp netbook, gave it to her mum and wants a new one. All sh does is browse and type. Not sure my idea is what she will be happy with.
She doesn't like my old nc10 either...
Don't want chromebook.
I wonder.

Make sure it has a SSD drive rather than a normal harddrive- a world of difference in performance and boot up time.

My Mum thought she needed a laptop with a proper keyboard. After a couple of hours with a decent-ish tablet (google nexus) to understand how much easier it was to do the things she wanted to do, it became clear to her that she didn't really need it after all. The old laptop now gathers dust.

That's what I thought, but she needs to type!

I've just bought my wife one of these to replace her tired old laptop.

So far it's doing everything she asks of it.

One review, hardly a fair view of the item.

Why not a chromebook? Sounds perfect for the use you described.
A tablet with a keyboard just isn't the same, and 7" tablets are significantly smaller.
Chromebook falls well within budget as well.

I'd go with the netbook. iPads are a pain IMO- not properly compatible with anything

I'm severely tempted by one of these, decent enough reviews around the web on various tech sites.

Would be interested to hear how you find it, and what you think of it ? What's real world battery life like ?

I'm in a similar position, I bought my fiance a little pink Asus netbook the Christmas before last and it's now on its last legs (partly because it's pretty low on power, partly because she's managed to break a corner off the casing and has knackered the power supply socket!).

Not sure how I should replace it. Netbooks seem to be out of fashion and in any case are painfully slow with modern web browsers. She likes my cheap Windows tablet (Acer Iconia) until she wants to type anything; I suggested one of the little Asus Vivobooks as mine has been excellent, but she doesn't like the ****ing colour!

So I'll be interested to hear how you and your mrs get on with the new machine, Gaz - could be a good option for us! smile
