My house is not great for mobile signal so Three recommended I download their app which sends the mobile signal via the broadband. My broadband is virgin 100mb fibre with a Virgin superhub. I find the signal when using the app pretty crap and it's all jumpy. I looked on the net and some people recommend opening ports up on the Hub or using a static ip address. Any experience from other people? Il call Three as a last resort as their call centre is not the best.

pretty sure the superhub allows outbound traffic on all ports so wouldn't really help much, if your going to open up an inbound port then you will need a fixed/reserved ip on your phone to point the traffic to but i don't really see that as being a particularly likely solution or viable way to work with something that is supposed to be for hotspot use too. plus opening up inbound ports shouldn't be done without considering/understanding the security implications.

Fixing the IP of the superhub isn't likely to happen via virgin on a domestic package, having said that if you leave you modem on its unlikely your IP will change, i have had mine for years. even so i cant really see how fixing your ip on the superhub will affect call quality, its not like its going to change every couple of seconds, like i said i have had the same ip for years.

Chances are its the processing power of your phone, is it the latest and greatest? I had O2's version on mine and it didn't work at all, but then my phone has a steam engine in it. O2's worked fine on my tablet though. I'm guessing three's is a bit more heavyweight as o2's was compatible with gingerbread but three's requires kitkat which is why i haven't tried it yet as it also needs the cell radio in the device(ie a phone) so i cant use it on my tab and my phone is still on gingerbread.

It may also be possible your not getting a good enough wifi signal to your phone, is it better if you try it near the superhub?

have you tried a wifi analyzer app to check your wifi signals aren't choca full with your neighbors, maybe there is a better channel you can switch the superhub to for a better signal.

VoIP is taking a while to catch on with mobile devices, it could just be that even the latest and greatest phones are only just up to the job and in the perfect conditions. O2's and virgins own app are at best ok and useable because it saved an international phone call when used on my tablet and in the same room as the wifi router

I have the same issues exactly. I complained about the signal on twitter and got a call from the tech guys.

The audio etc was breaking und distorting when they called, they said if I upgrade to a 12 month contract they will send a signal box to use instead.

Just waiting for a quiet hour to speak to the upgrades team.

quick update for anyone in same boat - i spoke to 3 who advised putting the phone into aeroplane mode then switching wifi on while in the house. Although slightly annoying to do everytime you leave/come to house it has solved issue and now calls are crystal clear.

interesting i wonder if that frees up cpu time by having the cell radio turned off such that it can cope with the VOIP load or if its something like the cell radio interfering with the wifi radio

the problem is that if you get half a bar or one bar then if the phone rings the call is on celluar only and wont swap to voip at all. The only way round this as the reception is bad in my house is to put the phone into airplane mode and then switch wifi on whenever i enter the house.
Likewise the voip wont switch to celluar if you had celluar switched on.

You can get those apps that automate tasks on your phone. I guess you could easily get it to go to airplane mode when entering the home and then revert back when leaving.

What happens to texts though? Do they come through the wonder box too?

Texts do come through the In Touch app. But they end up in the In Touch log, as opposed to the one for text messages via the phone. This can result in parts of a conversation being in two places depending which program handled it.

Or the same message comes through repeatedly; I quite often get the same message 3 or 4 times. Sometimes the phone will ring and when you answer there's no one on the other end, then you get a voicemail that the person left a few minutes before it rang, PITA.

Zen (BT Fibre) and iPhone, uninstalled as it was completely useless.

Nowhere nearly as useful or reliable as the O2 app. (when I was on O2)
