ADSL broadband from BT. Not complaining! Cabinet is about 250metres away though.

Doesn't matter how far your cabinet is when you're on ADSL, it matters to the exchange. ADSL holds speed much better over long distances than VDSL (which is what BT Infinity is)
I meant exchange! Ah I look like a fool! boxedin

Are you suggesting you could switch back to copper broadband afterwards?

I used to work for BT who would not switch people back to copper once fibre had been activated at their property. Ask the question before you commit, if you do.

That's what Zen told me, but I didn't get it in writing.

I'd be very very happy with 20/2 (upper scale of the estimate) but not with 14/0.8 (the lower). Unfortunately, the estimate is too wide a range to help me make an informed decision. Zen only quote the lower of the range, so I would have no comeback if I end up with 0.8 upload.

Imagine being sold a car and being told it might do 60 or 90 but you have a buy it to find out.

Did some further exploring and it seems the problem is my house is nearer to the exchange than it is to the cabinet!

Cabinet is around 1km by road, exchange is around 750 metres.

Therefore ADSL is probably going to be a better solution until FTTPoD possibly becomes available in the far flung future.

At least with tweaking I now get 13mbps/1.3mbps which isn't too bad for most needs, only really precluding cloud backup.

Just to add closure to this - three years later and www.dslchecker.bt.com had nudged up the estimation a bit. Zen were still not keen on me upgrading, so I moved to IDNet and took the risk.

I'm really, really happy with the result.

When I first got Infinity I had a BT engineer in the house doing the install. He gave me the spiel about how it might take a day or two to get up to it’s best speed. He then plugged in his line tester which reported 39.95Mb/sec (possible maximum of 40Mb/sec). I kept a straight face and said “I’ll keep an eye on it to see if it improves at all.”

It would be hard to be more unhappy with BT & Openreach in my case.

There is crappy line/jointing/ali cable between my house and the cabinet about 1.25km away. BT Wholesale ADSL checker estimated 15-21 Mb speed and this is confirmed by the many, many engineers who have visited.

They also confirm that the disconnects, slow speeds (1Mb), massive ping times (1000ms) etc are most likely due to crappy line/joints etc between my house and the cabinet, but also that Openreach will never replace the line as it's too expensive. So Openreach have now decided, with no evidence, that it's a REIN issue.

As it's a REIN issue they don't really have to do anything and haven't now for about 5 months. They also refuse to provide any details about this mysterious REIN issue, which is not in my house, but 'somewhere', and magically doesn't affect people closer to the cabinet.

Others along the same line have speeds that reflect 'impacted line' ie stty jointing/cable quality.

If I had any other choice, I'd take it, but there is no 4G, and due to being surrounded by trees satellite won't work either.

I fecking hate the s at BT

You cannot be nearer the exchange than the cabinet cabling wise , as the line adsl or fttc still comes via the cabinet , as in your data your adsl line is 1750 from exchange and for fttc 750m .

Well yes, that was my expectation based on all the advertising. If the speed estimate is to be believed the reality would be very different and there appears to be nothing that can be done. I'd take the risk, but it appears it's a one way move for 12 months.

Of course he can switch back to adsl from fttc .
