I'm honestly slightly puzzled at the amount of people that find a 3-4 year old laptop that still works some sort of achievement confused
as has been suggested , an 'appliance grade' laptop from DSG or Argos with a marginal spec and all sorts of bloat, plus the rubbish that none savvy users acquire over the years

there are fundamentally 4 groups of people when it comes to buying computers

1. 'power spenders' whether it's the lastest Mac , or a near as bespoke as you can get from a builder/ reseller windows machine

2. 'appliance buyers' - who will buy stuff from DSG/ Argos / supermarkets

3. 'geeks' who will build their own

4. bargain hunters ( sweeping up the power spenders cast offs or working their contacts for ex corporate refurbs or over stock)

my last 2 machines have been from option 4 - my XP machine was up to date middle market for when i got it but i paid rather less than retail as it came via a contact in a specialist IT compnay who had ordered ' a container full' to deliver on a big project

my current machine is a refurb that AIUI came from the planning or highways dept at the council via a professional refurb place local to me (Xeon w3505 ( which according to wiki is very similar ot the early core i7s) / Nvidia Quadro / Win 7 -64)...
