We have loads of external hard drives, all from different manufacturers at work. WD, Seagate, Toshiba etc. Never had one fail, unless it's been dropped from a great height!
Obviously it can happen, but as long as you have a backup I wouldn't worry who made it.

No! I jumped ship to PCs in the mid-nineties. Fortunately for me, I had always been interested in PS/2s and RS/6000s which gave me a head start when the black AS/400s and new S/36s were introduced and PC networks started to take over.
