I have used iPads previously, and iPhones, but am keen on buying an inexpensive tablet for gaming only, preferably android which ive never used.

Do new/cheap tablets suffer in any way, frame rate or whatever, or can I buy a "decent" new tablet i expensively which perfectly does the job as a games toy?

If I was looking to buy one in the morning, what might i be looking to get as a minimum spec/brand/model? I'll probably pop down to the shops and end up buying whatever the sales chap reccomendes, so any suggestions on buying appreciated. Cheers.

Changed my Ipad1 for a Sony Xperia Tablet Z a couple of months back & can't recommend it highly enough. Hudl2 takes some beating if you're on budget though.

Try the nexus 9. The 64 bit chip is supposed to be slick for gaming.

If you're on a budget... Hudl or Asus Memopad of some description.
7-8" is the sweet spot for gaming imho.

Smiler.

The Hudl is outstanding VFM.

My Mrs has a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, her dad has the Hudl is almost identical and only cost £130 (they actually only spent £40 as they "doubled up" on clubcard vouchers).

The older one was great, but it died.
I relaced it with this, which I have returned twice.
They are all the same.
I blame the Intel chip, but what do I know?

There must be a few different versions? Was looking at a 'HD' one a couple years ago and it was on par with a 1st gen Nexus 7. Although your description of your Memopad matched that of my N7... frown

My Hudl 2 has an Intel (Z3735D) and is no worse for it, if anything it's better.

The original version was an ARM based device. It was crap. Hudl 1 was definitely a better device (with a sharper screen, although not as bright).

Newer version is Intel. Which almost runs everything on Android, and tends to do a darned good job of it.

I've had a first gen Nexus 7 which was brilliant for 14 months then started turning itself off every 5 mins.
Then replaced with a Memopad HD 7 which was to all intents exactly the same as the Nexus. A great bit of kit apart from the fingerprint magnet screen.
Anyway that also died within warranty so was replaced with the new Memopad which is the crap one.
It has a crappy Asus skin which is really no more than some minor tweaks to the UI. But I hate it.

Installing the Google Now launcher helps but as they say you can't polish a turd.

My kids both have a Hudl 2 and play lots of games very nice screen. For the money it can't be beaten. Way better than the hudl 1 they had first.

I'm looking for a tablet as well. Had an iPad mini but wanted a change. I bought a HP Stream 7 to play with and that was good but went back as there was a flaw with the headphone socket. I did find 7" a bit small, so probably 8" is ideal.

Any other suggestions?

I had one. It's really well made but the SoC is pretty old now and it lagged a bit even when I first bought it. Fabulous screen and features though.

Recently bought the missus a Galaxy Tab 4.0 8" model, seems pretty good, despite Samsung's best attempts to ruin it with TouchWiz. Nice bright screen, fairly snappy, battery seems good too. Would have probably preferred the Z3 Tablet Compact, as it is a lovely piece of hardware and Sony's skin is much closer to stock, but it was twice the price and she had already been spoiled rotten.

If you can stretch the the Sony I'd recommend it, from reviews it's about the best small tablet on the market (a few reviews include the iPad Mini in that), but the Samsung and Hudl 2 are also cracking bits of kit for the money.
