Picked mine up today.

First impressions are; ridiculous fking nano sim requirement; ridiculously bastardised interface; ridiculous lack of a back button.
After further testing and running it alongside my Nexus 4, I decided to send the Fire phone back.
Even side loading apps, Nova Launcher for example, couldn't get me to gel with it.

Oh well, I'll have to stick with the Nexus 4 for a little while longer.

I'll be honest, i'm struggling with mine - bit of a shock coming from Ios and Android and that's before we even get to the hideously limited Amazon App store

Looks better with the Nova loader, but can't apply wallpaper! Also, it seems that the version of Fire with the locked phones (3.6.6) won't work with the manual install of the play store, so all apps have to be downloaded as APK and sideloaded instead. Even then, all the Google apps won't work.

I'll stick with it anyway, most of the time i'm just checking emails, half a dozen websites and Facebook

This is a second phone though. Mostly I use a Sony Xperia Z1.

I like the screen on the Fire despite the low resolution and I find it more comfortable in the hand than the Sony. It seems a bit slicker and quicker too.

It doesn't really need to be much good for my use. It just needs to be a phone.

I have just seen Amazon UK have dropped the price of these for today from £399 to £99 (with no contract).

I know it has mixed reviews but at a hundred quid seems like a bit of an absolute bargain for anyone interested.

Special offer is back again at £99 for anyone interested - just popped up on the homepage!

I still haven't used mine apart from messing with it for a couple of hours on the first day. I think I'll put it on eBay for £50 with free postage to see if there are any takers.

I bought it as a spare mostly but I've had an upgrade since then. I quite liked it to be honest in the play I had with it but I've got another spare phone now.

Is there a way of unlocking these yet?
Wife loves her Knidle HDX and seems to have no issues using it at all.
On a 3 contract with a year to run though, plus 3 performs vastly better here, work phone is O2 and isn't great.
Is there a French version I wonder as they have to be sold unlocked if i remember correctly.

If you load the latest firmware 4.6.1 (461013820) i believe that it's no longer carrier locked

And the latest firmware lets you load the Playstore - so it's hello to Youtube, Gmail, Google Maps etc that's missing on the previous version.

From what I've read it now runs Android Kit Kat and is indeed unlocked with the latest update.

I will have one if that is indeed the case.

Though if I return triumphant with a new phone that doesn't work as a phone with my '3' sim my life won't be worth living.
