I have had a zyxel 310 NSA for a few years now and since i have AFTV with xbmc , i thought id turn it on and try and set up a NFS share. So installed the latest firmware and the interface is still clunky and doesnt work (reasons it was collecting dust anyway) so i have given up on it.

So what i want is a server that can do the following

1x HDD bay
2x USB plugs for my external HDDs , it must be able to share these volumes without reformatting.
Relativley quiet (lounge location)
<£100 delivered

It needs to share media without fault to the following:

2x android phones using bubble upnp to then stream to chromecast
1x android tablet for films etc ( dont have a tv in bedroom)
1x windows 7 pc can be set up to use a network drive (send over wifi)
1x amazon fire tv running xbmc (kido)
1x wdtv live that will be used when i finally get another tv
1x PS4

Basically i am after a server thats easily "discoverable" by default using something like upnp.

PS does anyone want my zyxel 310

I recently swapped from a clunky old Buffalo to a Synology DS213j, the Synology couldn't be easier to be honest, even a muppet like me (with a little help) has got it working with Windows PC's/notebooks, Windows phone, Android phone & tablet & iPhone.

Is much quieter too.

Another vote for the synology. Literally the easiest thing to set up and ticks all your requirements. Had mine a year now and love it. The apps that come with it are great too and can cast films from the NAS to the TV via a Chrome Cast which was a really plus point for me.

Yep - running a Synology 214 with 2x WD 3TB red HDDs and it has been faultless.

Accessed by WD TV Live, 2x Android phones, 2x Android tablets, 2x IPod Touch, and 3x laptops running Win7/8.1

Sits quietly minding it's own business in the livingroom next to the TV unit and just works.

Another vote for Synology. The Synology 115j is £83 at eBuyer, excluding the disk (I can recommend WD Red if you don't have a spare SATA disk you can reuse)

And another.

Tried an IOmega first and that st itself within weeks and I ended up having a friend recover the data (most tun Linux OS and have a weird file structure that you can't just get to with Windows).

The Synology took a 1/4 of the time to set up and just works.

I run a Synology 214Play with x2 3TB WD Red hdds. Works like a charm, would thoroughly recommend.
