I set a maximum bid of £1 for a test ad. Minimum costs for the keywords I wanted were £2+. I've still had a few views, though. How does that work?

It's very complicated. Speak to the Google help team, they will explain and may even give you some credit. I have used it for years and found it excellent. .

I've not lost money. I feel like I've beaten the system, though.

The bids I've made have been <£1 yet when I look at the keywords, they all cost £2. Is it because people are running out of budget then the bid price drops letting tightwads like me play?

I think there's a whole load of variables that come into play with bid prices but you can often still get impressions (and clicks) when you go under the suggested amount. For my ads I suspect the time of day they are shown has the most affect on bid price. Your "quality" score and landing page is also some thing to look at.

Sorry what I meant by credit is they sometimes say thanks for joining here is £50 for no reason. . That's a good way to get your account started.
