My contract with 3 ends in a few weeks. My intention was to renew as normal. I have beem with them for 11 years .Today I rang them to chat about renewing my contract to be to told tethering will be capped at 2gb. They say I normally use 2 to 8. The only option they have is to go back to a dongle. Is it true that all networks are capping tethering to such a low limit as 3 say. I am disappointed and they wont even up the allowance if you pay more.

Can't you stay on your current deal? I'm with them on SIM only and it was up for renewal last year and I had the same thing about capped tethering, so I stayed on the one plan which I was on.

From what I have read they will switch us off at their leisure and unlimited tethering no longer exists. Its 2gb or go away. Its like going back in time not forward.

Not heard anything about being switched off anytime soon. Though the reason for the new limit is 4g as you could replace your home broadband and swamp the network.

I have 4gb, and tether quite often, the 4096 allowance left NEVER goes down for me on the three account/app

What happens once your contract expires though? Unlimited tethering is a thing of the past it seems.I have been on the one contract for 4 years.

If all you can eat data is important then maybe try a slightly different approach.

If you've got a smartphone with microUSB Slimport, get a VGA or HDMI Slimport adapter with the microUSB charging port. Connect your monitor and your charger to the adapter and mirror your smartphone's display to the monitor.

In addition use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to navigate the smartphone, web pages, docs etc.

Canonical were going to take this even further with an OS which would automatically reconfigure smartphones into a PC when external monitors and keyboards were connected. Unfortunately they decided to drop the project.

But if you want to make the most of your data, get yourself a Slimport HDMI/VGA charging adapter+bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Something like:

I'm in a similar position to you, been on the one plan for several years, out of contract next month and looking to upgrade, just checked on the 3 site and I average 6 to 8 gig due to tethering my pad when on night's, not looking forward to being capped if that's the case now.

Whats getting me is the puny new amount. From unlimited to 2gb is pathetic. It means no more lappy use whilst I am away from home . My smart tv I just bought for my camper has become pointless. In this day and age we should be getting more accessible internet.2gb means no streaming no you tube no webcam . 3 said I will have to go back to a dongle but these are capped at 15gb too rather than unlimited as previous.

I'm on this contract.

I was advised by the guy in the 3 phone shop to never get rid of the contract. No matter what they offer you, when it rubs out just keep your old contract and they will honour it.

He explicitly told me they will never offer it again now that 4G is on, but by the same measure they can't cut you off from it unless you're doing 100+ downloads per month.

Obviously, this was all told by a shop assistant so how much water it holds is unknown, but that was what I was told. When my iPhone 4S finally dies, I'm just going to buy a phone off apple so I can keep my contract.

Like you I've been with three for about 11 years. My 'unlimited' contract ran out last year and I don't want to upgrade to a new contract as I won't be able to get the same unlimited bundle for as cheap as £18/mth that it's costing me now.

I was on a similar T-Mobile contract unlimited internet, with no fair use policy.
I was told exactly the same thing, and it worked for ages, and I was happy.
It came to renewal, and they told me in store that "It would be the same as last time, you will be on the same contract, don't worry"
They lied, I complained, They said they couldn't re-instate an offer that doesn't exist anymore, they won.
So basically, all I (& the OP) need to do us just keep paying our contract & it's all gravy?

I'm lucky in that I knocked it down a while back to the £15pcm sim only deal. Which if all this is correct, means I get as much mobile 4G data as I will ever want for £15pcm for ever?

You will be cheated out of it one way or another at some point, so enjoy it whilst it lasts. smile

And make sure you read the T&C's from the contract you currently have, print them out and keep them safe!
They will still beat you.

Hmmm I just changed this week, and got sold the "all you can eat is over" on the tethering.

So they knocked me down to cheaper plan, and through in the mifi for £5 month which suits me. its only 1GB but might up it to 15gb as its quicker than my home BB.

My wifes contract went sim only a while back, and that went to 2GB tethering only - be aware!

Still a great network..

Just a question to those who have recently had their contract expire, did it automatically drop down to the £18 per month at the end if the term, or did you need to contact 3? I might just buy a phone outright and stick my sim in or stick with my M7 as tethering is a bloody nice thing to have on nightshifts.

I swapped from my three phone contract to rolling monthly sim only as I didn't want any of the upgrade options. Wanted unlimited phone data so went for the £18/month option. Comes with 4Gb of tethering. Haven't had reason to try it yet though.
