Buy a used HP/Dell/Lenovo business model laptop. then add a SSD drive to it.

Far better than a £500 quid consumer laptop from the likes of Tesco.

That Dell is cheaper on the dell refurb site:http://www.dell.com/uk/dfh/p/inspiron-laptops?~ck=anav

But as before - GET A SSD drive. Either from the manufacturer or buy own and install. The differnce is night and day.

I wouldn't buy a dell. Seen far too many have hardware failures in the first couple of months of ownership.

Oh yah. Michael Dell is deservedly bankrupt and penniless after shipping rubbish PCs to business week after week for decades. When will those silly businesses learn? silly

And a reliability report from the last year, as opposed to 5 years ago:

Dell are second bottom. Asus, IBM, Toshiba and Samsung are the way to go.

Q: has anyone seen a laptop fitting the OP's description with i5 and HD or better screen for £500 or under? By 'HD' I mean the smallest x by y resolution number should be at least 1080.

I'm in the market for a cheap laptop too. Well, a girl I know is and her budget is tight. I've spoiled myself with higher end MacBook Pros and Airs over the last five years or so, and my bargain hunting is a bit rusty! She wants a windows laptop and I agree: as an only computer, a chromebook probably isn't wise.

Yes, the link I put up was out of date.

Your link is very strange. I can't understand the scores when Amazon laptops score 7590 points and Dell score 39 with Acer 9. Does that really mean that Amazon are nearly 900 times more reliable than Acer? The entire Acer brand would die in a month...

weird, I'm not arguing with the rankings outright, it just seems very strange.

do you understand it?

That's explained above the table. The data they have is limited to people who've contacted the company - since anyone with an amazon tablet contacts amazon, they've had comparatively few requests in comparison to the share of the large US market they hold.

Acer only hold 2% of the US market, but 20% of the company doing the survey' business came from acer customers. I suspect Acers survival comes mainly from products across europe and asia, than the states - either that or there hardware is that bad (doubt it - although I don't personally know anyone with an acer)
