There are several possibilities, the two most likely are:

1) You PC has been compromised by some malware/key logger that is capturing your password.

2) You are triggering these by trying to access your Google account in an unusual matter, e.g. via a VPN or Proxy, perhaps such as Mobile network or Work place internet access.

Take their advice and go through the attempted accesses and identify them, then try and work out where they are coming from.

If they were using the correct password why would Google block it?
Good point!
Same reason your bank might block certain transactions that have authenticated correctly - suspicious usage patterns.

If you logged in to your google account in London and then someone tried an hour later in Nigeria, what would you want them to do?

I've been using free zenmate vpn which has five locations, one in the UK, then US DE,CH,HK and I've had the Google change password thingy as they think I'm signing in from a different country when signing in to gmail, guess their pattern matching says can't be in all locations in such a short space of time, sent him a 'passwordy' email.
NEVER use anything when logging into something you need to keep secure. So banking, email etc use a seperate plain vanilla browser or turn off.

You never know when that extension you use will get hacked, and if it does your bank will blame you and not want to know!

I got this whenever I restarted my work machine which has an exit point in the west country when Google know from my phone that I'm in Watford.

I think it was google chat as that was the only startup service I had running that used my gmail address but I also think Spotify sign in can trigger this alert.
