At the last track day I was at I borrowed a GoPro HD Hero 3+ (£300 odd) and mounted it to my crash helmet. The footage was great but the audio was absolute trash. It was mounted in the waterproof case which I guess had a lot to do with it but I'm not convinced that the GoPro audio in general is up to standard.

Here's a clip;

My thinking for the next track day is to buy a GoPro Hero (Budget model, £90, no wifi and 1080p at 30fps max) and run an external mic in the car.

What mic to run and how to record it is something I'm still deciding on.

I was looking at the portable Rode Condenser mics, you can get one for the iPhone that plugs into the Lightning connector but there's also one with a 3.5mm jack.

Meaning I could run the following setups:

- GoPro Hero w/ Rode mic plugged directly into it. Mic mounted on helmet beside GoPro or somewhere in the car.

- GoPro Hero w/ onboard mic. Then run the Rode mic mounted on the helmet also or stuck onto one of the windows w/ the audio recording onto my iPhone in my pocket.

Eventually I would like to get another GoPro to run external to the car or out the rear window etc do in my mind it makes sense to run external audio. I can easily layer it all in post.

The rode mic with a cable would also mean I could mount it outside the car or in the boot if I wanted.. Vs the short rode mic for the iPhone which does not have a cable and plugs directly into the bottom of the iPhone (couldn't keep in my pocket)..

Does anyone have any experience running this sort of setup and is there anything to consider before rushing into it? Also any recommendations for microphones to capture cabin/external noise is appreciated.

You're right the audio is crap, I didn't hear "V-Tec Just kicked in Yo" being shouted.

The £99 Hero won't work with an external mic, sorry.
