Looks impressive over all but did you know you can make many similar repairs with tissue paper and super glue to metal and plastic.

I've used super glue and tissue paper to repair a radiator when off-roading for example.
most glues work really well in compression , tension lets them down - it;s the whole basis of composite construction the glass / carbon '/ aramid is strong in tension and a bit floppy in compression. the resin is not so god in tension and really good in compression ...

Reason I said it was I found most of their stuff over priced really.
Thought it was just me, or perhaps I'm getting older, but most stores these days seem full of pimply faced yooths with no formal qualifications as opposed to a few years ago ,when most staff ( or in extreme the more senior) could suggest alternative components .

As for superglue- I've found a cheap version, and a lot easier to use. Swimbo has soft nails and oft-times breaks a corner. she's found a nail glue ( sold for false nails she tells me ) helps repair the damage. It's superglue in a bottle with brush and can be applied as superglue, but as it's brushed on the coat is finer and can be applied into small spaces.

Way back in the late 1970s I got a temp job in a Hornby Hobbies factory in Kent. I noticed they were using a special glue to stick the roofs (rooves?) onto Scalextric Cars and Hornby Trains.

I sort of 'acquired' a bottle and took it home. It lasted me ages and ages and stuck most things I wanted it to, as well some that I didn't.

The name on the bottle was purely scientific, no trade name, it was cyanoacrylate.

That is now called 'Superglue'.

Now read the 1st 6 words again....this was in the 1970s!

This stuff is not so new you know!

Funny thing that. I went into one of theic stores at the wrong time of year. They had just put up xmas stuff. I asked about where the pci network cards were - couldn't see them. Turns out they had took them off display to make way for xmas stuff. Guy brings out one at £20. I said I knew tyhey did a white box own label one for a tenner. After a further 10 minutes out he comes with the cheaper one asking did I really want to buy the cheaper one in a patronising tone. I told him there was little difference he said I was completely wrong I got him to open the box and said but look it uses the same realtek chipset - you see that marking there. It was essentially the same thing
I don't think he liked me very much. Another time I went in to buy a hard drive. External jobby. Was a clear £10 dearer than PC World and a tenner dearer than Staples. Another time I was after a Netgear desktop switch again dearer than both Staples and PCW.
They may be better on cables and the like and they plainly sell stuff you can't get elsewhere but I noticed a lot of their stuff seems cheap Chinese stuff. Personally I think their days are numbered

I was just really surprised at the amount of .....tat
And their pricing was way out.
When I looked at some routers they were 20 to 30 percent dearer ...........than Staples !
I'm sure some of their stuff is competitive or unique but I just think they will be gone this year.
Theirs more to retailing than just offering a free catalogue etc

I don't no about routers but I find staples a fortune!
I went to buy a postal tube and it was £3.50! Looked online and got the same size for 80p!

like techiedave, I was commenting more on Maplin's failure in the electronics bread and butter department. Cmos 4000 series- far easier to buy on line. lots of other reasons such as just trying to find components on their website.

Why are you going to the shop if you know its more expensive than its (already overpriced) rivals?

As regards the PCI card it was because they sold them and In knew from their website they did the white box one
As regards more expensive on other items err its on a trading estate and id call it checking prices ?

Hi Guys thought I should comment as I've just bought this Supafix stuff.

Best stuff I have ever bought by a long shot. I used it on a plastic clip I had snapped and tried normal superglue which didn't work so gave this a shot and it fixed it immediately.

On another note surely different places are going to be different prices at different times of the year the same as supermarkets?
Just saying

Maplin have taken over from PC World/Currys as the High Street "place of last resort" when there is something electronic/tech that I really really need for work or whatever "today" and just cannot wait for amazon/ebay to deliver. Would not mind if they were a few % more expensive, in return for the convenience of getting something "now", but they aren't, they are greedy enough to be 20-30% more than online.

They used to have good tool but these days it's all Rolson tat.

As for the superglue I've long since stuck to (heh heh) a brand called Hafixs (http://www.hafixs.co.uk/), can get it online, or you see them with a little booth at various shows and exhibitions. Keep the bottle in the fridge door (yes really) and it never blocks up so lasts for years. I expect it is exactly the same stuff in the bottle as the make at Maplins or indeed Loctite, in the same way that every brand of paracetamol is exactly the same inside the tablet but some people choose to needlessly pay a ton of extra money for the brands that pour money into fancy packaging and glossy advertising.

Hafixs

20gm glue, 30gm filler: £19.20

Supafix on Amazon

20ml glue, 20ml filler: £10.49

so the first is hardly a bargain at nearly double the price ! (Do you work for them ?)

I can't think that Hafixs what ever it is works better than Supafix tbh. In fairness I tried Supafix thinking it probably wouldn't work on plastic and ended up leaving a review as I was that impressed.
If it wasn't for those powders I think it would be the same as any other superglue though, these are are key!

My intended point was that any of these "superglues" will be the same stuff inside the bottle.
It doesn't really matter which you buy (well I assume they're not watering it down somehow!).
All I meant was that Hafixs has been around for decades and I've always been happy with it, far better value than the 0.5g of Loctite you get for £££ at B&Q etc.
If Supafix has now brought the same stuff to market cheaper, I'll be happy to try that next time I need a superglue.

I think your missing the point Kev. Superglue isn't anything new but being able to do what this does is ingenious! I personally tried loads of super glues for my plastic rear motorbike bracket and none worked. This Supafix wouldn't have worked either if it wasn't for the powders. This is the only reason it worked and at £10 it was well worth it as the new light was £40.
Being honest with you I normally find superglue rubbish!

The powders/fillers aren't something new with Supafix though? They might just be the first to put glue and filler in the same retail package and on a high street store shelf.

Chemistry tricks with baking powder to get it to cure faster and someone above mentioned tissue paper (giving it some structure to bond around I guess?) have been around a while and will work with any manufacturer's superglue not just Supafix.

All that jazz

scratchchin Is it just me that's noticed JonnyBel is singing the praises of Supafix just a little too much for the length of time he's been a member here? We aren't that stupid...
