I had the bottom three, no idea if the tapes are still in the loft or they went when I sold the ZX81 to fund the Spectrum.

1K breakout was a masterpiece of efficient coding.

Wow, 3D monster maze. Truly scary when I was a seven year old playing that. A shame my 16k RAM pack kept overheating and crashing my ZX81 at the time.

I've still got my ZX81 but not fired it up for many years - plus I no longer have a cassette deck to load the games with....

Also lurking in a cupboard somewhere I have my ZX Spectrum+.

Still waiting for them to appreciate in value - but I doubt that will happen anytime soon....

That takes me back, I had the bottom three too.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with the Spectrum Vega goes on sale in a while.

Classic era! I have 3D Monster Maze somewhere. I could kick myself for selling off my Ultimate games, they had great packaging frown

3d monster maze was awesome!

I had the posh 16k ram pack that went the whole length of the zx81 never budged, a good buy I think.

How well do those cassettes retain their data?

I tried some 20 year old tapes and they were fine. Haven't had a chance to try out the older ones yet - don't want to risk damaging them.

As for Ultimate:

Their early cassettes were quite modest. It's the later ones that grew the big boxes.

What a beautiful sight. An era when you fully anticipated, appreciated, and got the most out of each individual game. Brilliant era for me and many happy memories.

ETA Atic Atac was my first game with my first speccy, how I loved that game, blocky cell colour clashes included :-)

I drew an annotated map showing every room, since this was the days before domestic internet access so you couldn't just go online to find help with games ...

I imagine as a 13/14 year old I should have been out playing in the street or getting girls into trouble (to use the vernacular of the time) rather than sat in my room staring at a screen.

Talking of maps, I found an old A2 sketch book from my childhood in my parent's attic at Christmas when I was rummaging for decorations. Seriously, I'd struggle to do something this neat and precise now. The rooms are tiny!

The same sketch book that had this contemporary work: http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd237/Zadpics/G...

The Trans Am tape has brought memories back for me. Anyone know where a modern copy of this can be found to run on PC, iPad or android? It would be interesting to see my daughters faces when they first play it.

Many games can be played online through emulators. However, Ultimate have withheld permission for redistribution, so their games are not available online or for download. There are some remakes around, but I've not tried them.

Atic Atac was probably my favourite of the early games from them - I went back to it as an adult and played it right through and mapped it over a few days.

It turns out Tim Stamper (ex Ultimate boss) is back in the game with a mobile games company called Fortune Fish - their first title is called 'That Bouncy Thing' and is in the Android store right now.

Excellent. Looks like the original Jet Set Willy to me? That game had me addicted for hours and hours.

The other game which had me hooked was Turbo Esprit - a bit like a olden day Grad Theft Auto....
