I am doing some building work and we have a skip out the front. Some locals have decided to dump their considerable rubbish into our skip.

I want to get a reasonably cheap camera that I can mount inside the house to record the front garden and street so I can return the rubbish to its rightful owners.

Something with its own hard drive that I can review should I need to.

TIA

Just get a cheapo usb webcam from ebay. £2 should do it no more.

However, if the skip isn't on your property, I'm not sure there's any law against putting stuff in them?

These. Mine came from China, but you can get them from uk sellers for a bit more.

This is the link to where I get my wireless versions from. They are proper quality kit!

how do these things work? do they record on to SD card? I have a traditional set up but want to install an easier system if possible.

I just want a camera that can record independently as it will be left in a house undergoing renovation - i.e. no wifi. If someone has decided to dump their rubbish then I want to be able to download the footage if not I can reset it.

Yep. Mine record on movement to sd really as a backup as I also have a separate pc which records each camera 24/7'using an awesome piece of software called blue iris. I can either use the mobile app that comes wth the camera, or the miles better blue iris one which includes push notifications etc when motion detected.

What about a Gopro cam? How long will it record for on a 32gb card?

Don't know how low you can set the resolution to, but in theory a long time

The one I suggested does motion and looping

That will work yes, although unless you've already got one or can borrow one it's probably cheaper to buy another skip tongue out:
